Mike, You might find this helpful - http://www.scantips.com/basics01.html. 16 bit color depth means that the scanner is using 16 bits for each color when it digitizes an image. Each pixel would have 2^16 x 2^16 x 2^16 possible color options. 16 bits/color means 2^16 or 65,536 shades of each
