I remember hearing about a new camera which was actually a stripped down
version of an older camera and was wondering if this was that camera. but I
guess that was a nikon camera.

In general it's really hard to recommend any one camera over another
because everyone's needs are different. In the end you have to just
compare the features and price and decide
Totally off topic but we have a great wealth of wisdom in plugdom. WHich
is the better camera rebel t6 or t7?

Your best bet is to look around places like eBay, Craigslist, offer up and
other places like that. It may take a while till you can find one that is
in your price range
