What you observed is the curious problem.
Yes, it does display with a transparent background,
but when I put it on the main panel, it shows up with
a white background. That is what I don't understand.
I right-click on the panel icon -> click "Icon set

Thanks for the video. I am able to create the icon with a transparent
(checkerboard pattern) background, but it still shows up on the panel with

Thanks! I also found a similar procedure that recommends removing the memory
card to save the user data on that device before doing the hard boot.
