kernel version 2.4.15
i have succesfully comiple a kernel and install it.
but when i tring to boot with kernel 2.4.18 it gives me error as follow:

I think that the card is properly detected and working.

You need a initrd and LVM enabled.
Google for initrd / mkinitrd.

As a side note, why not write out the configuration ?
$ man interfaces
The least you can do it write out a small script and put it in rcS.d.
$ zcat /usr/share/doc/sysvinit/README.runlevels.gz | less

your suggestion got me thinking again and i used
/sbin/ifup wlan0
to get wireless interface up and then down as a part of checking.
After chaning making it ad-hoc and penguin [instead of foo]
I think now with this I am able to get ifce as I can see the following
