setting
vga=extended
before label and
vga=788
after the label in lilo.conf and also putting in the boot cd and
reconfiguring the X by going into upgrade seems to have solved the
problem for me atleast for now.

I am spawning a new thread because I have seen similar problem, that
Mahagsagar reports, with other distros as well.
