Re: [PLUG] Setting up a mailing list (server)

2007-09-01 Thread Aneesh Mulye
In simple words, dont setup a mailing list without a domain name. I
dont think any users will love to remember IP addresses for sending
mails to mailing list. Domains are cheap, so go buy pne and setup the
MX record to point to your server.

 regards

I'll try to get a domain name, but I'd like to know if it is possible
to run a mailing list off a static IP. I want to do some testing
before going all-out, and prior to getting a domain and everything, I
want to make it work the way I want it to, so that later, when I
present the thing to the people concerned as a proof-of-concept, it
will be a completely working system.

And how expensive is a domain name?

I'm looking for information on how to set up a mailing list server for
college-related work, similar to the one we're interacting with here.

On and off when I read similar thing the only issue that crops to my
mind is who maintains it when the original admin/proposer is not around
(it is an inevitability if you are a student and a possibility if you
are a faculty) and thus I'd really say that if such a chance exist push
the infrastructure bits of your required service to someone who already
has such a thing set up.

A requirement for both the lists is that it should be able to set up
tagging rules for each user. For instance, on the announce list, a
user may say that if a mail contains the tags [COMP] or [ENTC], it
should be sent to him. Or a user on the discuss list may say that
all things marked [OT] will not be sent to him.

Being very pedantic, that above is not a mailing list function. Tagging
would help filtering and mail sort at MUA for end user. Unless there are
multiple recipients of mails marked say, [ENTC] a direct mail to sender
or creation an alias for which more than 1 user receive a mail copy
might be suggested.

The above is not a requirement set in stone, however. Even without
tag-based rules, it'll be possible to manage.

Ahh...

I also want to find out information as to how to set up a web-based
interface to the list, such as we have on our PLUG list, for users to
 manage their settings.

Any decent mailing list software / web based existing list service
should provide that along with somewhat limited security that archives
are available only to subscribers
