Re: [PLUG] Ubuntu edgy

2007-03-21 Thread Ranjit Bhonsle

It's called distro fatigue. There comes a point in time when people start
to look beyond bragging rights about successful install and driver
insertion, and want to get some work done.

Ya, I guess people work with computers. I use it mostly for information
gathering, computing my taxes and an occasional game. But all of that
pales off when a new fedora or in recent times Ubuntu is launched. I have
to have it and install it. The kind of kick that gives me is second only to
installing a new piece of hardwarewhich is very rarely.

You've nailed it about Ubuntu - the CD will obviously not carry all drivers

etc. You can also try Knoppix 1.1 or Mandriva 2007 according to your deb
/
rpm inclination - both work rather well with minimum fuss about drivers,
as
they have less of a politico-philosophical constraint. I was surprised
with
the Knoppix Live DVD - it booted fairly quickly, detected the default
internet connection, recognized hardware, and let me create a pretty
little
card for my daughter in Tuxpaint on my Lenovo R60, all in Live mode. It
may
have some stability issues though, as it includes more of the cutting edge
stuff and is not as thoroughly tested as Fedora / Ubuntu. I also needed
to
reboot the computer once and pass the necessary resolution parameter at
boot
time for the LCD. Another irritating aspect was the way sub-levels of the
start menu take up the whole screen, and fonts need to be tweaked in all
distros except Ubuntu to keep eyes from watering.

By the way, is it just me, or does this list bounce slightly longish mails
only selectively?

In recent times at least these guys have not bounced any of my mailsbut
it happens in every plug members life in plug my opinion.
regards,
Ranjit.

Hello Mr. Anand Kulkarni

I was also thinking in the same direction. But I am
not aware about how receive required information from
Govt under Information Act. If you help us then we can
certainly seek the details of govt expenditure on
 proprietory softwares.

With the help of Right to Information Act 2005 we can get almost all types
of information from Government/Public Sector Organisations.
Please visit RTI section of our website http://www.grahakraja.org And you
will get all the details about RTI.
We need to file applications under RTI for getting information about funds
spent for purchasing Licensed softwares to all Government Organisations in
Pune.

YES.. You are right. We must knock the door of the
court of law. But its a long process and will involve
 some level of expenditure.

We can file the PIL online at http://supremecourtofindia.nic.in/

I will attend the PLUG meeting on 7th April 07 discuss the ISSUE in
details.

Do you find the default fonts in Fedora to be problematic? I doubt that
that's the case since both these distributions default to the same font
family.

It may perhaps be due to the default fonts in Firefox on Linux - that's what
I tend to use most at home. There are various other applications that
somehow do not use the right fonts. Bad font defaults and limited choice
have been two of my biggest gripes with Linux. This certainly puts a
beginner off - first impressions do matter.

Hi,
On a related note, CDAC Chennai has come up with a new Ubuntu based distro
called BOSS specifically tailored for Indian languages. I didn't see
inbuilt marathi support.

Ahh but you might try the latest Fedora and check the Marathi support there.
On a completely side note, the OpenOffice.org Community Manager has a
nice article on the case for ODF (Open Document Format) in the current
issue of LFY

+1 to this. I share your joy for trying out a new distro. Thanks to
this, I've discovered Belenix, and am going to start working on my own
Belenix release sometime soon.
