Will there be a Mumble bridge? PTSN telephone access is going to sound
very degraded (8Khz GSM.722) and web-browser solutions are very
 unreliable.

If you (or anyone) would like to do a test run of online conferencing, I'd
be happy to host a meeting so you can begin working out the details before

My telephone is ancient, and I dislike using it. And no, a new phone
would be even worse - it's the new features that I hate. So I would
much prefer to do it all on my desktop computer. It might be easiest to
use a browser - Chromium or Firefox, which play videos with sound just
fine. I have several old microphones that I can plug into the desktop,
but I'm unclear how I would make the browser pick up the microphone and
then have the presenter know that I have my hand up to ask a question.

For me, live audience interaction is fundamental to the 'group' thing.
Would the presenter be able to see the audience, perhaps as small
squares on a monitor? If I was presenting I'd want to be able to see my
audience.

Maybe I just need to wait until April 2 when we can actually do a
virtual PLUG meeting. In fact, a good topic for April 2 might be 'How
to run an effective video meeting on Linux.'

You can fully participate in a Zoom call by telephone. You don't need a
webcam to ask questions. If there's video, of course you would need a
computer running for that, but dial-in works for both listening and
talking, just like any teleconference service.

To participate passively an audio connection (e.g., telephone) is all you

John/Fred,

It's an "Anivia 1080p HD Webcam W8, USB Desktop Laptop Camera, Mini Plug and
Play Video Calling Computer Camera, Built-in Mic, Flexible Rotatable Clip"
.

If you look at the second-from-bottom image on the product page you'll see
it supports linux (and other OSes) and Zoom (and other applications).

Given Amazon's focus on Prime members and warehouse employees with Covid-19
it will be several weeks before it finds its way here. I'm looking forward
to getting it up and running with Zoom so I can more effectively prospect
for new clients.

I just bought a web cam with built in microphone(s). It's USB-connected so
it will work with all hosts here.

As for conferencing software, I haven't used any, but some folks at church

Zoom's basic plan (free) and looks perfect. Meetings of three or more are
limited to 40 minutes (should be sufficient, especially if everyone is
standing), while 1-to-1 communications are unlimited. Works with all
platforms (liux. macos, windows, android, ios) and all devices. When I'm the
host others don't need to have zoom installed and can participate via video,
audio, phone, desktop, laptop, phone, etc.

I've just been using the camera in my laptop for years. It works pretty
well, though a bit annoying because I like to tilt my laptop screen away
from me so the camera is pointed up and just barely catches my head unless I
tilt the screen forward. After fighting with headsets I now just use the
laptops built in mic and it seems to work just fine.
