You should definitely enable storing the file locally. Not only would
this guarantee more control over what you see, but also

I've discovered that if I grit my teeth and let a track play through the
stuttering, the next track will be OK. I may have missed some stuttering
yesterday, when I -thought- everything was OK. Closing the player and
restarting does not help, apparently because the bad track is already
downloaded
