Downgrading caused all sorts of frightening problems, so eventually I
upgraded to 7.9.1 which is higher than the "latest version" at
https://www.mysqueezebox.com/download.
That fixed it.
I'll leave it alone from now on...
stop press: sorry, I worked out how to downgrade to 7.7.5 but it did not
solve the problem.
