UPDATE: It appears to have nothing to do with holding on to buttons, but
switching skins, e.g. from Boom to SB3.
It doesn't always happen, but when it does, it gets annoying.
But you're right, bpa.. restarting LMS forgets the player, and as I
guessed might happen, also fixes the display! :)

Thanks. Oddly, the problem has gone away after a few days, without
restarting LMS.
Perhaps it had timed out anyway!
MUST REMEMBER NOT TO HOLD DOWN ON A BUTTON!

There's the "Client cleanup" plugin, not sure if it'll do what you
require though.

I'm not sure what king of player Softsqueeze is,
It seems switching to an LMS on a different server gets it working
again, but switching back to the original causes the problem to come
back.
This seems to suggest an issue with the way LMS communicates with
Softsqueeze.

I think there were a few bug reports that if you accidentally held down
on a button press on the soft remote, you'd get persistent text
scrolling on the display from the last station you were listening to.
Closing and restarting doesn't help.
Neither does uninstalling and reinstalling nor changin
