Ronnie - yes I can investigate other operating systems, but my
preference would be to use pCP for consistency. I am reasonably familiar
with Linux, so should be OK.
Paul - yes, I'm aware of the need for a phono stage
It would be better to use
arecord -l
as that would only show the valid capture devices - "aplay -L" shows
ALL alsa device playback and capture.
WaveInput is a LMS plugin and so audio input will only work on the Pi
which has both the Line-in hardware and LMS.

You could run
aplay -L
to see if any input devices have been recognised by the system.
If they have then you have a good chance of it working.
You might need a pre-amp between the turntable and the Pi.

One of my pCP players is a model 2 Raspberry Pi (no built-in wifi or
bluetooth). It has a Cirrus Logic (Wolfson) audio card fitted, which
works very well and I'm using this Pi to drive Bluetooth headphones via
a USB bluetooth stick. The other USB socket has the USB WiFi stick.
