My Classical library has a couple of thousand tracks so that looks ok.
I should have explained further that I have a menu level below Classical
that sorts tracks into Albums or Works. It's these menus that are empty.

discovered that the Spotify iPad app plays gaplessly
(previously I'd assumed the problem was with the Spotify tracks needing
re-coding), I'm starting to use that more which is less convenient and
also seems to have a less effective search function.
