What version of AlienBBC are you using ?
With the iPlayemenu menu support there is a separate Search facility
which is provided by BBC.
The keypad menu search was avbailable for AlienBBC on SS 6.5 but IIRC
it is not available for SC 7.x

I'm running SC7.2.1 with AlienBBC 2.02b1, so yes it does have the Search
iPlayer option, which I do use. But sometimes it would be just easier to
go to Radio 1 and then press 6 to skip to 'M' and just browse there
quickly.

In SC 7.x all menu handling for AlienBBC is handled by SC core code and
so shortcuts using keypad etc would be the same for most of the others
menus handling. You need to make a SC request and not an AlienBBC
request.
Possible alternatives would be to setup some predefined searches as
menu
The core SC has two modes - alphabetical which is supposed to be used
when the list is sorted and number based when it is not. I think we
may be able to make it do the alphabetical one but we would need to
have sorted lists (which we don't all the time?)

It seems like the way that the menus are returned by the server are to
have a couple of major items (Schedules and Categories) at the top, and
then an alphabetical list of the programmes.
The Live Streams are a non-alphabetical mishmash in the order of the
stations importance: I guess the only
AlienBBC does special handling to present the Categories and Schedules
but otherwise the menus are extracted from the BBC iPlayer web pages.
The Alternate Listen Again menu are derived from BBC XML feed for the
programs.
The order of the menu items are as per the BBC supplies them.
