no biggy for me.

And once again, thanks Triode and bpa for all the hard work over the

I do know things have to move on but like others I offer my sincere
thanks to Triode and BPA for having this excellent plug in over such a
long time . I am listening now to Cerys on 6music with the new Sounds
app and for that I am very thankful . However with out this plug in I
would have missed listening to the shows i love on the BBC network .
Good luck going forward and I hope you find some new music to warm your
soul.

The BBC Sounds plugin is available from Plugins tab 3rd parties plugin -
no additional repository

You need to register & sign in on BBC Sounds website first and use the
login with BBC Sounds settings.

I started using SB about 15 years ago wanting to listen to some Radio 4
programmes in Ireland - the only medium was LW with lots of hiss.
Even poor quality audio was better than none at all. So 48kbs RealAudio

The APIs used by BBCiPlayer are dead. BBC pulled the BBCiPlayer Radio
Android app for non UK users in Sept and so no reason to keep the feeds
going as there was an alternative.
So there'll be no more development of those plugins.
Some user do not want to register with BBC so I'll keep them available
but update to remove the "Listen Again" menus - to avoid confusing
users.

If you're happy with BBC Sounds - I'd remove them to avoid clutter.

BPA, you'll never know how much your plugin has meant to me over the

with solace, joy, tears, and love especially in 2020.

Upgrading to 7.9.4 (not worth the effort) better , 8.* is not a BBC
Sounds requirements.
The world has moved to https TLS 1.2 minimum.
Without up to date https /SSL support you will not be able to access

Thanks Slarti and bpa. I've found the BBC Sounds plugin

There is no difference. They are the exact same digital streams - just
the API to find them has changed. Even the digital stream in HLS and
DASH transports is the same.

The 320 vs 339 and VBR vs CBR are due to BBC's inconsistency in
documenting their streams. What value is shown depend a which parts of
the metadata - which is arbitrary.

I'm not sure what you are trying to do.

BBCiPlayer plugin "Listen Again" functionality has stopped as BBC
stopped the feed. For most users, there is no point in installing
BBCiPlayer or BBCiPlayerExtra.

To listen to BBC - use the BBC Sounds plugin. It syncs with BBC Sounds
app and browsers.
The BBC Sounds plugin is available in 3rd Parties plugins tab.

You first need to register with BBC Sounds web page to get an id and
then enter that id into BBC Sounds plugin settings.

Yes - iPlayer Listen Again & iPlayer Extra have been very much a part of
my daily listening go-tos for years now & apart from occasional hiccups
from changes to BBC streams have rarely had cause to visit these
threads. Sad to see it go & many, many thanks to Triode & BPA for the
years of getting & keeping it going.
There's still a certain amount of functionality left in the 2 apps I
read above so they're still loaded for now.

I'm still using LMS 7.9.1 (last Vortexbox Fedora 20 distro) still & the
new BBC Sounds app seems to be working so far

Might be time to zap a newer laptop with the latest VB software so I get
the later LMS software through updates

Did that before, did a rev of the plugin etc. and then a day later BBC

Podcast have been available in BBCiPlayerExtra for a couple of years.
People get comfortable/complacent with a small set of options/choices
and don't explore and discover new things until their world is shaken.
https requirements forcing NAS users to upgrade/discover Pi and OS
upgrades are prime examples.

Most of BBCiPlayerExtra still works A-Z and Genres & Podcasts. The
station menu used the "Listen Again" feeds" and so are broken.

The BBC Sounds plugin works with 7.9.x, so there is no need to update to
v8 to get the Sounds plugin.

I know what you mean about clicks but it's early days only 3 months old.
The BBCiPlayer plugin built on AlienBBC and so has had about 15 years to
get it right.

Using a proper API should mean it is easier to maintain but it may also
force a certain navigation "style" onto the UI.

The BBC have provided a feed for "Listen Again" for many years but have
indicated that it would be ended. There have been previous hiccoughs and
service ruened but I think this time it is final as BBC Sounds became
available to non-UK user at end of Sept.

I suggest migrate over to the BBC Sounds which uses an API which BBC's
own apps use.

The BBC Sounds plugin is available in LMS 3rd parties plugin list - no
special repository needs to be added. You need to register on BBC
Sounds web site for an id.

You have a problem with your PCP install. IO::Socket::SSL is missing.
IO::Socket::SSL is need for https support. This will affect lots of
internet services (not just track info for BBCiPlayer) including LMS
respository.

For help, post this issue on the pcp 6.1. thread.

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] BBCiPlayer V1.6 (and higher) & BBCiPlayerExtra 2.0 (and higher) Support

2020-11-09 Thread acanning

Morning All

I’m not sure if this question should be posted here or in the
PiCorePlayer thread.

I’ve recently started listening to Radio 3 more regularly and notice
that I don’t get the now playing text showing on any of my devices. This
in itself isn’t a massive issue but it makes me wonder why not when
other users certainly report that it is working. I’ve read back through
this thread and have all the necessary settings switched on in the BBC
iPlayer plugin.

My Pi4 server runs LMS via pCP 6.1.0 with the following info…

Logitech Media Server Version: 7.9.4 - 1603273368 @ Thu Oct 22 04:21:56
CEST 2020
Hostname: piCoreLMS64
Server IP Address: 192.168.0.16
Server HTTP Port Number: 9000
Operating system: piCore - EN - utf8
Platform Architecture: armv7l-linux
Perl Version: 5.28.0 - arm-linux-gnueabihf-thread-multi-64int
Audio::Scan: 1.02
IO::Socket::SSL: Nothing
Database Version: DBD::SQLite 1.58 (sqlite 3.22.0)
Total Players Recognized: 12

I use a variety of players and have Material Skin as my default option.
I don’t understand the significance but I see that I have nothing
against IO::Socket::SSL which doesn’t look right? If I putty into my PI4
and enter the command ‘openssl version’ it reports OpenSSL 1.1.0l 10
Sep 2019 but that isn’t showing in LMS.

Could this be the problem regarding the Radio 3 text?

Actually, I’ve just noticed these errors appearing at the top of the
plugins screen so something is definitely amiss.

Latest version of Sounds has its own playback capability now. It is

I suppose I can use the Sounds app to check the schedule then play it in

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] BBCiPlayer V1.6 (and higher) & BBCiPlayerExtra 2.0 (and higher) Support

2020-11-05 Thread Scottishlad

I can get the on demand streams to work and access my subscriptions on
BBC Sounds but can't get anything from the live streams. Any suggestions
as to what I should be checking.

I am running LMS 7.9.3 on picoreplayer.

Now resolved via the new BBC Sounds plugin version 0.1.3 introduced
sign-in - excellent.

BBCiPlayer (or its earlier incarnation AlienBBC) has never had any way
to bookmark where "Listening" has stopped. LMS menu handling (at least
for older SB players) will "remember" the last program - but the not
position withing the program.

If you are listening to a BBC podcast, then I think position can be
remembered by LMS podcast.

I'm finding that when I listen to an archive programme (i.e. not live
radio) via the iPlayer plugin, that the player doesn't remember the
point I've listened up to if the session gets interrupted and resumed.
For example if I'm listening on a PC and it goes into sleep mode and
later wakes up. The iPlayer programme will restart from the beginning
rather than wherever I'd got up to. FWIW I'm generally using
Squeezlite-X in this context, but I've noticed that same thing listening
via a Touch.

I'm sure this used to work better than it does, but I suppose I may be
imagining that...

Is this expected behaviour ? If not, anything I can do to help debug
what's happening ?

History Lesson.

The plugin is constantly chasing BBC and so settings which used to be
important may now be less important or even redundant.

When Triode implemented the current iteration of BBCiPlayer the audio
formats were Adobe Flash and Apple HLS.
Then BBC migrated from Adobe Flash to DASH with the aspiration that DASH
will be the only one required in future. I implemented DASH and retired
Flash.

The Extra plugin uses the URLs from the web player which now only offer
DASH or occasionally MP3 podcast (very rare, maybe never now, sometimes
on very old program they may be in Flash) . This is probably so that BBC
can bundle a JS DASH & MP3 player as part of the their player &
RadioPlayer popout player.

There are NO HLS streams from the Extra plugin - so DASH has to be one
of the options in BBCiPlayer "on-Demand" settings.

If BBC decides to offer HLS I think plugin will be able to handle it.

The AAC audio in HLS and DASH is exactly the same.

Hostname: raspberrypi

Audio::Scan: 1.02
IO::Socket::SSL: 2.060
Database Version: DBD::SQLite 1.58 (sqlite 3.22.0)
Total Players Recognized: 6

The only difference in our setups is the LMS version which could be the
problem. Interestingly, the log shows the following when I attempt to
play an Xtras program:
[20-10-08 15:09:59.6709] Plugins::BBCiPlayer::iPlayer::scanUrl (148)
Can't find a suitable media URL within the iPlayer URL that matches one
of the preferred playback types: hls,mp3,flashaac,flashmp3

It looks like Xtras uses the iPlayer settings to work, so I will play
around with the file type order in those settings to see if that solves
the problem.

For me, probably just today (ie. what's on next or soon, shall I

The plugins used to have a 7 day schedule feature (it may have been an
Extra feature) when the BBC maintained a public APIs to stations,
programmes & schedules. However a few years BBC have withdrawn all
public API and so reduced Extra to a minimal service with a single API
(which is likely to be to be cut as well).

All the APIs are now private. Screen scraping would take too much effort
to maintain.

However, I have been looking at the private API mainly to implement a
backup should current plugins fail. The query about personalisation and
now schedules made me look again at other parts of the API.

IIRC the API used to be inaccessible but since since Personalisation for
non UK users was supported by BBC in mid Sept 2020, I think more
functions work (or possibly I've got better).

Checking the schedule part of new API and the API seems to work.
Example Radio 3 11-Oct-2020
https://rms.api.bbc.co.uk/v2/broadcasts/schedules/bbc_radio_three/2020-10-11

Long story short - schedules may be back on the menu.
Two caveats: 1. BBC may lock the API once it gets used by "outsiders" 2.
Need to find time to do a schedule menu amongst a few other updates

Hi,
I use the BBCiplayer plugin often, it's very good, especially when used
via the material skin. One thing that would be useful would be if the
schedule for up-coming programs could be displayed somehow. What I mean
by this is currently I can listen live or on catch-up. If I am on
catch-up the days programming for a particular station up to the present
time is displayed, but is it possible to display the schedule for the
rest of the day? Of course I understand this won't be playable, but it
would be useful to know as currently I switch between the iplayer plugin
(to listen) and the BBC Sounds app for the schedule.

I appreciate this is a bit out of scope for the plugin, but thought I'd
ask to see if it was possible and if it would be useful to other users.

Thanks for a great plugin and your ongoing support through these forums.

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] BBCiPlayer V1.6 (and higher) & BBCiPlayerExtra 2.0 (and higher) Support

2020-10-06 Thread Paul Webster

It gives me Latest, Bookmarks and Subscribed

Most of my BBC Radio listening is via DAB or LMS ... so they do not know
much about me.

However, long ago I created an account there and I marked a few
programmes as favourites or similar and they now appear under the
Subscribed list.
The Latest appears to be a list of recent episodes of those Subscribed
programmes.

They do send me a weekly email with recommendations ... but it might be
the same content for everyone.

The "Latest" list could be a useful shortcut in LMS - even if I had to
maintain the list of subscriptions via BBC web site/Sounds app.

I just took a look at the cookies ... there are lots so even copy/paste
of cookies would be a pain.

Backburner at best.

We are all different. I try to avoid signing in to the Beeb, or any

It's not a feature I use so I don't have a personal interest/need to
implement it. Is it useful or like Netflix lots of rubbish ?

It's not a public or simple API (i.e simple single http GET request &
response) so it would mean
(i) hacking the login method
(ii) hacking the recommendation and creating a menu from them somewhere
so they can be played.

I think it could be implemented like BBCiPlayerExtra, as a separate
plugin, it create "iplayer://" URL for recommendations and then uses
BBCiPlayer plugin to play them.

LMS has for a long time done the https to http swap. However, there
were a number of bugs/shortcomings (e.g. NB in HTTPS, redirection)
which I think were only fixed early this year - IIRC some fixes were
backported into 7.9.*.

In term of the BBCiPlayer plugin, I think we can end the general https
discussion in this thread - any exploration of the broader LMS & https
issues can be done in another thread.

This is a topic you brought up a few years ago but at the time many
users were on old OS, LMS etc and functionally was not necessary. If I
changed all over to https then, it would have resulted in many posts.
It looks like we're past the tipping point and also LMS own https
support has been vastly improved.

I'll look into the changes when the next update is due. I think BBC
are changing stuff behind the scenes and so I'm trying to anticipate
what will be needed in next update.

Not sure if this is related, but, in LMS 7.9, there was a case where if
an HTTPS connection failed when fetching repository xml, LMS would retry
the request with HTTP. I guess if that redirects back to HTTPS, you
could end up stuck in a loop. This behaviour 'has been changed for 8.0'

Oh, and while we’re on the topic of the plugin not working unless your
OS has robust TLS support, I still think it makes sense for the plugin
to prefer HTTPS to HTTP. Most HTTP URLs that the plugin uses now
redirect to HTTPS, so trying HTTP first is just going to slow things
down a bit, with no improvement in compatibility for users who can’t use
HTTPS.

OK.

This is strange issue.

It has also affected LMS repository fetches and Windows version of LMS.
Sites which technically should support TLS request less then TLS 1.3
(e.g. TLS 1.1) seem to have problem with SSL/TLS libraries support
which is not quite up to date or the old SSL/TLS libraries have a
problem with site which support TLS 1.3. Either way it is a problem
outside of LMS and BBCiPlayer plugin.

A separate issue but associated issue when this failure occurs - know
of two instances where LMS "spins" making the same request about every
0.002 secs and so effectively locks out all other LMS activity.

All is solved by updating but for some users this seems to be a drastic
solution and cannot understand the failure of backward compatibility.

Sorry, I should have been clearer: I’m not having any trouble,
personally, I just wanted to chip in to show how one can test what
versions of TLS your OpenSSL can use with a particular site. Leave off
the “-tls1” and it’ll use whatever it thinks best.

I think this demonstrates that that's not the problem here, right now
(unless there exists a buggy version of the libraries that negotiate TLS
1.3 and then can't actually use it). However, it certainly *is* a real
problem that users will experience somewhere, sooner or later, if
they're stuck on an old version of OpenSSL, so the advice to upgrade to
a recent OS is solid in any case.

If you use other internet service such as plugin repositories, audio on
demand, and many radio stations - you'll hit the "https" issue. I think
you should prepare for an upgrade and as Ronnie said - insitu upgrade
Jessie to stretch is a pain - better to make a new image and go to
Buster. If you are not forced then you can prepare a separate sdcard
with Buster/LMS setup, get it working to your satisfaction knowing that
you can still use the Jessie sdcard while you iron out Buster issues..

The other post is from a Windows 7.9.2 system which is known for the
https problem but not for the tight spinning on the same error. bins
problem is on a Pi and LMS updates didn't fix it.

Ronnie (aka Man in a van) did sterling work with a series of tests on
various version of OS/libraries and although there was https failures -
the spinning behaviour did not show up.
This make me believe the root of the problem of LMS "spinning" on the
http GET failures is somewhere within the Perl supporting support
modules and libraries possibly Openssl and not within BBCiPlayer plugin.

Thanks for the systematic installation and test.
It shows clearly why Jessie and Stretch have https problems.
Openssl is key and that to get LMS with full "https" functionality
(i.e.access LMS repositories as well as BBCiPlayer) users need to have
OpenSSL 1.1.1 and for Pi that means Buster.

Tedium well beyond call of duty - you're not in lockdown are you ?

Log show the https realted failure of repository xml and also the
Radioplayer fetches. Again, the failure was well behaved with failed
fetches 30 secs apart so that live stream can play OK.

AFAICT Stretch is OpenSSL 1.1.0.
Main difference between 1.1.0 and 1.1.1 is the support of TLS V1.3

I'm not absolutely sure.

OpenSSL comes in various "apt" packages. The relevant ones installed on
my buster are

libssl-dev
libssl1.0-dev
libssl1.0.2
libssl1.1
openssl - but this is automatic - i.e. dragged in because of other
packages.

I suspect on Jessie - only the libssl1.0-dev (and maybe a libssl1.0.1)
are installed but looking at there is no 1.1.* for Jessie (see
https://packages.debian.org/search?keywords=libssl )

There are no error message in the Boom log which again is expected as
IO::Socket::SSL is recent 2.06x and I'm guessing the OpenSSL is also at
least 1.1.*

If OP upgrades their OpenSSL 1.0.* to 1.1.* and problem goes away - then
it will show that OpenSSL version is another component to be checked
with suspect "https" type issues.

I have a spare pi4 - I may try this evening installing older version of
OpenSSL to check its significance

Interesting.
The Radioplayer error is being logged (i.e. https support is the root
cause of the erro and also the repository xml errors) and so you are
reproducing the error at the expected 30 secs interval. For some reason
it gets out of control on @bins system and doesn't wait 30 secs.

I suspect Radioplayer needs/checks for TLS 1.3 which was only supported
from OpenSSL 1.1.* onwards and this causes the initial error. There may
be a race condition somewhere.

I have LMS 8.0.0 on my Pi (Buster). I upgraded IO:Socket::SSL to 2.068
but everything is OK. OpenSSL is 1.1.1d.

The OnAir text is current track/program info for live streams and is
retrieved from the RadioPlayer siet as well as a BBC site.

Attempted fetches from the RadioPlayer site causes the "error fetching
RadioPlayer BBC " message
Attempted fetches from BBC site cause the "error fetching BBC segments"

The fetches should be retrieved only once per 30 secs even if there is
an error. The attempt to get data RadioPlayer is not only failing but
in some way - the timing is broken and trigger an immediate retry.

While it is possible the https is the underlying cause - it is strange
other users do not have this same problem. So it is possible there is
another cause but there is a bug to be fixed to prevent the immediate
retry of the http request.

There is a situation with LMS on Windows where some users have https
issues and it is not clear why only a few users get the problem. I do
not know the workings of SSL/TLS but the security process relies on
stored certificates and I have seen one case where corrupted
certificates cause strange issues. So as a matter of course we try to
gather as much details of associated SSL & OS software on a users
system to find critical packages/modules.

Since your issue is a new manifestation - I am interested in knowing
what version of Openssl is on your system - just run the command
"openssl version"
