[SlimDevices: Plugins] IR Blaster - Suggestion

2010-01-25 Thread chrism

I have got the IR Blaster plug in working nicely from my squeezebox 3
(classic) connected via a wired connection to my Yamaha RX-V653 amp.

I have thought of an idea.

The plug in will currently transmit a number of IR commands in response
to a player event, i.e. power on, power off, vol+, vol- etc. It will
also repeat IR received through its IR receiver. The commands I am
transmitting were decoded from a downloaded pronto CCF.

What would be nice is to combine the two - receive an arbitary IR
signal through its receiver and in response issue one or more arbitary
commands through its headphone socket.

This would allow me (for example) to press power-on on my DVD remote
and in response, the SB to issue an amp on, amp input select, tv input
select and dvd on command. True macro functionality using supplied
remotes and my squeezebox for not a lot of money!

Thoughts?

Treads on Logitech's other toes --- Harmony et al.

But great idea for a plug-in non the less. Adds significant system
value.

Absolutely treads on the toes of Harmony - if I could afford one of
those I would have bought one a long time ago and I wouldn't need
this...

Is the IR Blaster plugin Logitech owned/developed? Do Logitech have
right of veto on third party plug-ins?

No, and as far as I know, no. However, it gets a little complicated
because since developing IR Blaster, the author (Felix Mueller) has been
hired by Logitech as a developer.

Well they can't really veto third party plugins to an open source
server.

The plugin is from Gwendesign, but I think that is Felix who is now an
employee of Slim / Logitech. Again the plug in is open source licensed.

Logitech could stop it by removing the 'Geekport' feature in the
Squeezefirmware which I think is used for the IRBlaster, but I doubt
they would.

Sorry just saw Aubuti's post - a little duplication

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] IR Blaster - Suggestion

Ah, if the developer has been hired by Logitech that changes things a
little.

Technically, it is not treading on their toes completely because the
harmony range go much further. With my suggestion, I would still need
the original remotes supplied with my components, I would just be using
the SB to cause more things to happen with a single key press.

i.e. I would use my DVD remote to issue a DVD power on code. The
squeezebox would see this and in return issue amp on and amp input
select codes. Ultimately I would love a harmony remote, but the minister
for interior affairs/scrutineer of the joint bank account can't see the
benefit. :-(

If the plug in is open source, then I might have a dig about in it
myself. I have a little Perl experience, but little plug-in experience.

Funny I also seem to have one of those finance officers, with strange
cost benefit assessments.

IR Blaster 5.4 defines an 'irblaster' 'send' CLI command. If you can
program your remote to send JVC DVD codes, then you many be able to set
this up without writing a single line of Perl code. Use KidsPlay to map
specific JVC DVD IR codes to sequences of 'irblaster' 'send' CLI
commands. The usage for 'irblaster send' is
Code:

irblaster send device button

but I'm not sure what those values should look like. To find out, set
IRBlaster logging to debug and send the commands. The value for device
is the remoteName in the log's IRBlastSend entry (the button value is
labeled button in an IRBlastSend log entry).
