The simplest approach is to leave the NAS as it is but stop running LMS

Yes, it's used as a general purpose NAS as well. I currently just use
SMB and DNLA.
The two functions (LMS and NAS) could be separated though.

something that you should compile or install, I don't know what is
available on SlimNAS...
