Restarting LMS did the job!

Downgrading caused all sorts of frightening problems, so eventually I
upgraded to 7.9.1 which is higher than the "latest version" at
https://www.mysqueezebox.com/download.
That fixed it.
I'll leave it alone from now on...
Try 7.9.1 or 7.9.2
Are you saying Connect mode does work for you?

I have the Spotty plugin doing Spotify connect on an old Squeezebox 1,
which is truly marvellous.
However, after upgrading my Logitech Media Server from 7.7.5 to 7.7.6 it
will only play one song and then it stops. I can make it play another
one, but it stops after that as well.
