40kbps really! That just goes to show how without sitting down and
comparing formats and sampling rates for casual listeing it does the
job anyway! Makes my time comparing FLAC/WAV/AIFF in-built and server
side decoding (which should all sound the same anyway) a bit of a daft
excercise...still it
Thanks for your reply - I am running SlimServer Version: 6.5.0 - 9916 -
Windows XP - EN - cp1252 and the Alien BBC filename is
AlienBBC-v1.06_6.5. I did download the non-installer version first but
didn't do anything with it (as couldn't figure out what to do with it

I have RTSP FLAC mplayer/flac and RTSP WAV mplayer ticked it seems -
RTSP MP3 mplayer/lame is not...

That's good - it means Slimserver has found mplayer and that part of
installation is OK. No MP3 because no lame.exe installed - which is
normal.
Can you post a log with d_source when you select a BBC station.
You'll find the d_source setting under Server Setting/ Debugging and to
open the log

I might have beeing laying the seeds for this broken Alien BBC :-)
All I have enabled are AIFF/MP3/WAV all built-in...except the RTSP we
mentioned
RTSP is not native to the SB3 so it has to be transcoded into a native
format.
By default it is Flac but you have built in Flac disabled.
So SS tried Flac to Wav but you have that disabled as well.
So the only format left is MP3 but you don't have Lame installed to
convert to MP3 so SS gives
Thanks - that is brilliant! I only had most of the file types disabled
so I could test out the difference between server side decoding and
built-in decoding when I was deciding how to store my rips. It doesn't
matter now so checked Flac built-in and all is great now - can't

I think your ears deceive you - the RealAudio streams are around 40kbps
IIRC - aimed to be usable on narrowband.
The RealAudio codec has flavours which are tuned to the typical sort
of program (e.g. R4 - voice, R3 Classical music) which may give a
better overall impression.

PS. notice that I get a new process of socketwrapper.exe every time I
try to play a station - might be a clue :-)

Can you confirm you get no sound on any BBC station or Listen Again

You are using an SB3 ?
What Security s/w are you using on your Windows systems ?
Sometimes after upgrading, mplayer.exe and socketwrapper.exe needs to
be re-registered with your security s/w as applications that are
I've checked more than one station but not all of them. I did check
that mplayer and socketwrapper are listed as exceptions in the Windows
firewall.

I had unchecked and then rechecked the exceptions for socketwrapper and

Yes, it took awhile, but I finally got it working. Of course, I

Checking back over the old thread (March) - the following worked for you
last time.
replace socketwrapper.exe with the version in following zip:

Also make sure socketwrapper, slim.exe and mplayer.exe are all still
servers

And ... it worked again! Thanks for the reminder. I really appreciate
your assistance. I thought there was discussion of making this modified
socketwrapper standard for Windows
no update of firewall etc
the strange thing is some of the alien bbc stations work and other
dont, the common finding is that in those that work , when they are
selected then activated to play - all respond by saying buffering is in
progress - up goe the %'s then - sound.
i may have to chop
the stand alone works fine on the pc - ie sound heard, but nil on the hi
fi via the wireless SB

You main problem is you are missing the RealAudio codec or it is not in
the right directory. Howwver the version of mplayer you are running is
veryu old. You should install the version that is linked on the
AlienBBC webpage (see below). This has the codec built-in so just
install the file and
I would say the same as bpa, but add
When editing mplayer.sh, DO NOT use TextEdit.
You need an editor that can use Unix line endings (which are different
from Mac line endings). You can do the editing in the Terminal if you
are used to Unix, or use Tex-Edit Plus or TextWrangler (both easily
Thanks for your advice
I replaced the version of mplayer with the one you suggested and had
already editted the mplayer.sh file with jedit but now I am affraid I
am getting this feedback:
dyld: incompatible cpu-subtype
Trace/BPT trap
Home-Media-1:~ root#
I am running all this on an old crt
My guess is that the newer verison of mplayer has been built to run on
G4.
To get something working you should revert to your orginal version of
mplayer and sort out the missing codec problem. I do not have an OSX
system so my advice will be based the OSX install instruction.
Did you install

Yep, the binary I built for mac which is linked there was built on a
G4. The G3 is kind of odd and I would imagine that's where the problem
is.
