Error 500 "Internal Server Error" is most of the time related to either PHP errors or Apache crashes etc, usually logged in PHP and Apache error logs. I never use any more PHP as CGI, so I cannot say anything specifically to that. Quite likely that running as CGI Apache does not catch and log
