We see America as the greatest force for good in this world, our

imperfect that he's palling around with terrorists who would target
their own country.  -- Sarah Palin

Those are the words of Sarah Palin, a candidate for Vice President of
the United States and an embarrassment to herself and our country. Her
presence on the Presidential ticket of John McCain demeans all
Americans who understand the words truth and civility.  It shows us
once again that the Governor is only interested in attaining unbridled
power and self-importance no matter what the cost to the dignity of
the election process. Her words are lies and her lies tell us the
truth: Sarah Palin is unfit to govern the United States of America.

McCain’s selection of Palin is just as revealing. It was a last minute
cynical choice intended to take the spotlight off  truth and substance
and replace it with lies and parlor tricks. It’s an affront to our
election process and the American people. As a consequence, the
Governor of Alaska has now settled into the immoral and unethical
world of the gutter language of hate, distortion, lies and vitriolic
attacks, in order to conceal the vacuum of ignorance in which she
lives.

Mrs. Palin’s reprehensible comments were based on Senator Obama’s
acquaintance with William Ayer’s, a member of the Weather Underground
in the tumultuous sixties. Many major publications in this country
including The New York Times and Time Magazine previously investigated
this erroneous charge against Obama and then disregarded it as
unfounded. Even so, in true McCain style the Republican candidate
threatened to keep his accusations in the news. And now, like a
ventriloquist he speaks little while he pulls the strings inside Palin
in a blatant and transparent attempt to turn non-issues into issues.

William Ayers operated in an environment of division and hate over
forty years ago during a defining time in America’s history. Ayer’s
actions may have been inexcusable at the time but they were his
actions, not Senator Obama’s.

Mr. Ayers is now sixty three and a professor at the University of
Illinois at Chicago. By the McCain/Palin yard stick, that would make
every faculty member and every student who has passed Ayers in the
hall or attended one of his lectures, a terrorist sympathizer. The
university has an enrollment of over 20,000 students. Are they to be
accused of hanging around terrorists and found guilty by association
as well? Is this the America we want to pass on to our children? Do we
want to relive the Joe McCarthy days Do we not have enough real issues

Re: Now is the Time, We Need You

2008-10-07 Thread Lone Wolf

Strike two, capitalism always works, provided it is not adulterated
by
government.

Get serious, provide the evidence to back up this outrageous and
ridiculous assertion.
In America the richest 1% of people own more than bottom 90%, while
the bottom 40% owe 0.2%--Failure
America owes $53 trillion and its trade deficit is 300% of GDP, twice
as high as in 1929--Failure
Half the world is living on $2 a day, while Bill Gates's fortune is as
large as the GDP of 120 of the world's 180 countries--Miserable
failure.

In other words capitalism rewards pure greed, not initiative. That's
why the politicians today are nothing but criminal business tycoons
more concerned about what they can make for themselves than any
concern for the concern for the welfare of their constituents.

The nature of this system will always reward the greedy and the
corrupt and there are no laws or mechanisms you can put in place to
stop it. Corruption is endemic to capitalism.

Look at the level debate in the elections, it's straight out of the
gutter. These people belong in jail, not standing for public office.

Another one in denial. Capitalism doesn't work, look around you its a
miserable failure beyond reform.

government those entrusted with power have, in time, and by slow
operations, perverted it into tyranny” and finally, “The tree of
liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots
   and tyrants”.
The current Machiavellian malevolence we as a people are forced to

intolerable. Were it simply the democrat party run amuck, “as they

The controversial George W. Bush-sponsored poll in South Carolina
mentioned John McCain's role in the so-called Keating Five scandal,
and McCain says his involvement in the scandal will probably be on my
tombstone. What exactly did McCain do?

In early 1987, at the beginning of his first Senate term, McCain
attended two meetings with federal banking regulators to discuss an
investigation into Lincoln Savings and Loan, an Irvine, Calif., thrift
owned by Arizona developer Charles Keating. Federal auditors were
investigating Keating's banking practices, and Keating, fearful that
the government would seize his SL, sought intervention from a number
  of U.S. senators.

  ----

  ----

At Keating's behest, four senators--McCain and Democrats Dennis
DeConcini of Arizona, Alan Cranston of California, and John Glenn of
Ohio--met with Ed Gray, chairman of the Federal Home Loan Bank Board,
on April 2. Those four senators and Sen. Don Riegle, D-Mich., attended
a second meeting at Keating's behest on April 9 with bank regulators
  in San Francisco.

Regulators did not seize Lincoln Savings and Loan until two years
later. The Lincoln bailout cost taxpayers $2.6 billion, making it the
biggest of the SL scandals. In addition, 17,000 Lincoln investors
  lost $190 million.

In November 1990, the Senate Ethics Committee launched an
investigation into the meetings between the senators and the
regulators. McCain, Cranston, DeConcini, Glenn, and Riegle became
  known as the Keating Five.

(Keating himself was convicted in January 1993 of 73 counts of wire
and bankruptcy fraud and served more than four years in prison before
his conviction was overturned. Last year, he pleaded guilty to four
counts of fraud and was sentenced to time served.)

McCain defended his attendance at the meetings by saying Keating was a
constituent and that Keating's development company, American
Continental Corporation, was a major Arizona employer. McCain said he
wanted to know only whether Keating was being treated fairly and that
he had not tried to influence the regulators. At the second meeting,
McCain told the regulators, I wouldn't want any special favors for
them, and I don't want any part of our conversation to be improper.

But Keating was more than a constituent to McCain--he was a longtime
friend and associate. McCain met Keating in 1981 at a Navy League
dinner in Arizona where McCain was the speaker. Keating was a former
naval aviator himself, and the two men became friends. Keating raised
money for McCain's two congressional campaigns in 1982 and 1984, and
for McCain's 1986 Senate bid. By 1987, McCain campaigns had received
$112,000 from Keating, his relatives, and his employees--the most
received by any of the Keating Five. (Keating raised a total of
  $300,000 for the five senators.)

After McCain's election to the House in 1982, he and his family made
at least nine trips at Keating's expense, three of which were to
Keating's Bahamas retreat. McCain did not disclose the trips (as he
was required to under House rules) until the scandal broke in 1989. At
that point, he paid Keating $13,433 for the flights.

And in April 1986, one year before the meeting with the regulators,
McCain's wife, Cindy, and her father invested $359,100 in a Keating
  strip mall.

The Senate Ethics Committee probe of the Keating Five began in
November 1990, and committee Special Counsel Robert Bennett
recommended that McCain and Glenn be dropped from the investigation.
They were not. McCain believes Democrats on the committee blocked
Bennett's recommendation because he was the lone Keating Five
  Republican.

In February 1991, the Senate Ethics Committee found McCain and Glenn
to be the least blameworthy of the five senators. (McCain and Glenn
attended the meetings but did nothing else to influence the
regulators.) McCain was guilty of nothing more than poor judgment,
the committee said, and declared his actions were not improper nor
attended with gross negligence. McCain considered the committee's
judgment to be full exoneration, and he contributed $112,000 (the
amount raised for him by Keating) to the U.S. Treasury.

  Next question?

The sad thing is that in the approach to the election, the GOP has
discovered an elephant in the room, and that they are going to vote
for it. That is interesting, as the elephant is probably a better
choice than either their presidential, or their vice presidential
candidate. Of course they have to take credit for the candidate they
provided eight years ago.

Some call it indoctrination and others say it encourages political
  involvement.

On a video posted on the internet, middle school students say Barack
Obama has inspired them to succeed.

Conservative morning Chris Stigall saw the video on the Drudge Report.

This is an indoctrination. It's not a debate. It's not discussing
relevant issues. It's not tit-for-tat, Stigall, with 710 KCMO Radio, said.

Stigall said his disapproval isn't because of Obama, but rather
  because where it took place.

No public school could or should get away with such a thing,
  Stigall said.

Stigall said on Monday morning that the school's director called his
show and acknowledged that the video was made on school grounds after class
  at a teacher sanctioned event.

At the Broadway Cafe, a midtowner said he wouldn't mind the activity
if it were organized by students.

If it's a teacher pulling them along, I think it's not as sensible,
voter Tony Haynes said. The teacher's role is not to lead them in a
particular direction, but give them a place to lead themselves.

A Republican who supports Obama said while he didn't see the video,
he thinks it's interesting these kids want to be involved.

I went through the public school and when I was there no one cared
about either candidate, voter Christopher Slocum said.

But another voter said teachers should interest them in the issues on
  both sides.

As a school based program, I don't think that's fair. I think all
issues need to be presented, voter Fern Mesa said.

The school's director didn't return our calls. According to FOX
News, the school suspended the teacher in charge of the after school
activity for insubordination after he posted the video online.

Re: McCain Lawyers Push Back on Obama Keating Five Charges

On Oct 6, 7:38 pm, mark [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:
PHOENIX -- The McCain campaign pushed back hard against the new Obama
attack over the Keating Five, arguing that the Arizona senator was
treated unfairly by the Senate ethics investigation and asserting that
John McCain had been much more open about his relationship with
disgraced thrift executive Charles Keating than Obama has been about
his connection with one-time radical William Ayers.

In a conference call with reporters this afternoon, John Dowd, the
Washington lawyer who represented McCain during the Senate
investigation, called the inquiry a classic political smear job by
the Democrats running the Senate at the time, saying that they only
included McCain to make sure that a Republican was among the targets.
John had not done anything wrong, Dowd said.

Dowd's point of view was amplified by Robert Bennett, the Washington
lawyer and Democrat who served as special counsel to the Senate Ethics
Committee during the Keating Five investigation, which focused on
whether McCain and other senators exercised improper political
influence over the regulation of Keating's failed Lincoln Savings
 Loan.

In an interview, Bennett said McCain should never have been dragged
into the ethics case to begin with. He said that after his own lengthy
investigation, he came to the conclusion that the case against McCain
and former Sen. John Glenn (D-Ohio) should have been dropped because
the evidence suggested that once McCain understood that the Justice
Department was investigating Keating, he backed off any involvement.
Dowd noted that McCain threw Keating, once a strong supporter, out of
his office after Keating pressed him to intervene in his case.

Bennett said former Sen. Howell Hefflin (D-Ala.) insisted that the two
be included in the formal public inquiry because otherwise there would
have been a month of public hearings with no Republicans in the
dock. The other members of the Keating Five were Democrats.

It was clear that McCain should not have been at the table nor should
Glenn, Bennett said. I felt it was unfair for McCain to be included
as part of the Keating Five.

mccain is erratic in a crisis, !

2008-10-07 Thread [ Republican for Obama ]

Obama to Preempt McCain Assault
 http://www.truthout.org/100608K
Branding his opponent as erratic in a crisis, Sen. Barack Obama, D-
Ill., is preempting plans by Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., to portray him
as having sinister connections to controversial Chicagoans.

Obama officials call it political jujitsu - turning the attacks
back on the attacker.

McCain officials had said early in the weekend that they plan to
begin advertising after Tuesday's debate that will tie Obama to
convicted money launderer Tony Rezko and former Weathermen radical
William Ayers.

But Obama isn't waiting to respond. His campaign is going up
Monday on national cable stations with a scathing ad saying: Three
quarters of a million jobs lost this year. Our financial system in
turmoil. And John McCain? Erratic in a crisis. Out of touch on the
economy. No wonder his campaign wants to change the subject.

Turn the page on the financial crisis by launching dishonorable,
dishonest 'assaults' against Barack Obama. Struggling families can't
turn the page on this economy, and we can't afford another president
who is this out of touch.

Then Obama says: I'm Barack Obama and I approved this message.

McCain officials told Politico that the new offensive is likely to
focus on Rezko and Ayers. The officials said the campaign will not
bring up the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, Obama's former pastor, because
McCain has forbade them from using that as a weapon. Without being
specific, the officials said outside groups may focus on Wright.

When word of the planned attacks leaked Saturday, Obama officials
said within hours that it was an attempt by McCain to distract voters
from the economy.

We think the McCain campaign made a huge error by telling the
press that their strategy was to distract from the most important
issue facing voters, a senior Obama official said. Every attack
going forward will be easy to characterize for what it is - an attempt
to distract from the Bush-McCain economic record.

McCain spokesman Tucker Bounds hinted at the tough new line
Saturday on Fox Friends.

There are associations that are important to who Barack Obama is
as a candidate, who he'd be as president, Bounds said.

Obama-Biden communications director Dan Pfeiffer said about the
new ads: If John McCain thinks he can 'turn the page' on the economic
crisis facing American families, he is even more out of touch than we
imagined. Now there may be no good answers for John McCain due to his
erratic response to the financial crisis, but his desire to avoid
discussing the economy is something we will remind voters of everyday
for the next month

A bloodbath of greed and misbehavior

2008-10-07 Thread Lone Wolf

By this stage, there can be no doubt, even to the dyed-in-the-wool
capitalist proponents: the chickens are coming to roost! The mountain
of debt, based on fictitious money, that is capitalism’s “lifeblood,”
is now falling as an avalanche that threatens to sweep the Old Order
to oblivion. Pundits talk of a “bloodbath,” “greed” and “misbehaviour”
by the financial elite. This is all bollocks. The capital enterprises
went there, because there was profit to be made, as analysed by Marx
and Engels more than 150 years ago. Attempts are also made to shift
the blame on the victim, in accordance with the “individual
responsibility” principle, so beloved of the neo-cons. Now, the whole
elaborate ideological superstructure is being revealed as a house of
cards, the corpse of capitalism is on life support, ready to be taken
out feet first. But then, where are the gravediggers? At this time,
this situation recalls the darkest days of 1915, a time of utter
confusion and disorientation of the working class; but at least there
was a Bolshevik Party to drive a progressive political perspective and
clarity. Today, despite worldwide discontent, the pauperisation and
the rising consciousness of the masses of the working people, there is
no attempt to organise a mass movement that would challenge
capitalism. A mood of hopelessness and helplessness takes over,
leading to a widely held view that “there is no alternative” to the
capitalist mode of production. The result is widespread cynicism and
alienation of the population towards political parties, the state and
its institutions, and big business.

There are continuing signs of a deep social malaise and alienation, as
witnessed in a comparative “backwater” of Finland just recently. As
Rosa Luxemburg remarked about 90 years ago, mankind stands before a
stark choice: “either socialism or barbarism”; and, of course, the
corollary is also true: without socialism, there will be barbarism.
This is why the role of WSWS and SEP is so crucial, and even more so
in these uncertain and potentially revolutionary times of ferment and
rising working class consciousness. The challenge is to begin to form
a mass socialist revolutionary movement from what still remains, a
largely marginal propagandist activity. Of crucial importance is a
membership drive to widen support amongst the working class, with all
the benefits of a mass movement, such as political weight and
effectiveness.

John McCain's Ballistic Misfire

2008-10-07 Thread [ Republican for Obama ]

John McCain's Ballistic Misfire

Sen. McCain, take it from someone who misspent much of his youth in a
neighborhood that specialized in unseemly persuasion: When preparing
to sucker punch the other guy in the form of a swift kick in the
balls, one normally shouldn't telegraph one's intentions.
http://www.buzzflash.com/articles/carpenter/203
But that's just what you've done, you hopeless klutz.

Last week McCain unleashed a veritable avalanche of pre-attack intel,
complete with the precise timing of his most desperate D-Day. When
asked by one of his overeager troops at a town-hall coven, When are
you going to take the gloves off? the candidate, according to the
Washington Post, grinned and replied, 'How about Tuesday night?'

And while you were blathering the timing of the larger, imminent
offensive, your advisers were blathering its tactical message: We are
looking for a very aggressive last 30 days, crooned one of them to
the Post, which, as newspapers are wont to do, was taking notes, with
the extraordinary idea of publication in mind. We are looking forward
to turning a page on this financial crisis, said, for lack of a
better word, the adviser, and getting back to discussing Mr. Obama's
aggressively liberal record and how he will be too risky for
Americans.

Naturally within minutes the Obama camp was broadcasting those words
-- turning a page on this financial crisis -- back at the McCain
camp, whose bluster and blather must surely have struck Obama advisers
with serendipitous bemusement.

Rarely are counteroffensives preceded by counter-counteroffensives.
But this one was, sucking all the umph out of its shocking
suddenness.

Meanwhile, leaving no guesswork to the opposition, the McCain campaign
also signaled the second component of its two-pronged offensive.
'We're going to get a little tougher,' a senior Republican operative
said, indicating that a fresh batch of television ads is coming. And
these ads, rather than turning pages on the collapsing economy --
something unemployed or imminently unemployed viewers everywhere are
likely to forget, right? -- will turn a new page on simple indecency
and dishonor: We've got to question this guy's associations. Very
soon, said the operative, meaning already in the can are grainy, slow-
mo spots showing Obama's close relations to Tony Rezko and one-time
radical William Ayres.

Now, we're all campaign strategists these days so it wasn't as though
the details and timing of McCain's final offensive were much of a
surprise. But why, in the name of what little suspense is left, would
he and his advisers so boastfully reveal so much and so soon?

Could it be that even they doubt it will work, so what the hell, why
not go ahead and posture and preen? After all, it's not like they have
any constructive policy proposals to fill the dead air and newspaper
interviews. No, they merely returned to the only real fundamental they
know -- a return to the old GOP playbook of going distractingly
dirty.

Although I continue to stand in awestruck admiration of these Rovian
spawns' indefatigable chutzpah -- I love never-say-die fighters, even
the dumb ones -- this time, I imagine, it just won't work. Or should I
say, especially this time.

Simply put, this presidential race has finally turned into an anti-
McCain contest. Once again, Obama has been most fortunate in his
enemies. They just keep handing him victories. In McCain's case, just
quickly review and consider merely a few of his confidence-sapping
missteps, to put it kindly: his talk of strong economic fundamentals,
followed by, within hours, his talk of a crisis; his insistence that
he wouldn't debate in a crisis, no, he will debate in a crisis; his
absolute refusal to condone pork, except when it's necessary.

There are many, many others, of course -- let's not even get started
on the judgment issue of Sarah Palin's recruitment -- and
ceremoniously ticking them off might make for a good drinking game,
but a lousy basis for a presidential campaign.

At its core, however, the reason McCain's counteroffensive won't work
is simply that the problem it's intended to hide -- a full-blown,
honest-to-God economic crisis; he at least got that right -- is just
too big.

Part and parcel of his coming spiel is much of that good-old,
apocalyptic, Hooverian rhetoric about a tax-and-spend Democratic
opponent, just when the electorate is poised to embrace a good-old,
tax-and-spend Democratic president -- just when it's ready to welcome
some classic pump-priming, regardless of deficit woes; just when
government spending equates in the electoral mind with jobs and
societal security and healthcare.

And the very last thing on the electorate's list of concerns is the
microscopic matter of William Ayers, coming to television sets in
battleground states everywhere, very soon.

What a pathetically desperate way to drop victory right in Obama's
lap.

 Is John McCain a Crook?http://www.slate.com/id/1004633/
The controversial George W. Bush-sponsored poll in South Carolina
mentioned John McCain's role in the so-called Keating Five scandal,
and McCain says his involvement in the scandal will probably be on my
tombstone. What exactly did McCain do?

In early 1987, at the beginning of his first Senate term, McCain
attended two meetings with federal banking regulators to discuss an
investigation into Lincoln Savings and Loan, an Irvine, Calif., thrift
owned by Arizona developer Charles Keating. Federal auditors were
investigating Keating's banking practices, and Keating, fearful that
the government would seize his SL, sought intervention from a number
 of U.S. senators.

Re: Royal Bank of Scotland and British Banks in Discussions on $79 billon Funding Plan (Update1)

RBS, British Banks in Discussions on $79 billon Funding Plan
 (Update1)
By Ben Livesey and Poppy Trowbridge

Oct. 7 (Bloomberg) -- The U.K. government may invest at least 45
billion pounds ($79 billion) in three of the country's biggest banks,
including Royal Bank of Scotland Group Plc, to bolster capital
depleted by mortgage-related losses, three people with knowledge of
 the situation said.

Chancellor of the Exchequer Alistair Darling and Bank of England
Governor Mervyn King met late yesterday with RBS Chief Executive
Officer Fred Goodwin and his counterparts at Barclays Plc and Lloyds
TSB Group Plc to discuss the possible investment, said the people, who
declined to be identified because the meeting was confidential.

RBS fell as much as 39 percent after Standard Poor's cut the
Edinburgh-based bank's credit rating for the first time in almost a
decade, citing its deteriorating financial condition. The government
has already bailed out Bradford Bingley Plc and brokered the
takeover of HBOS Plc in the past month on concern about the banks'
ability to fund themselves. Darling said yesterday he will do
``whatever it takes'' to keep the financial system stable as capital
 markets remain frozen.

``The equity markets are saying RBS has the biggest problem but
something needs to be done across the board,'' said Simon Maughan, a
London-based analyst at MF Global Securities. ``Bond investor
confidence in the banks is completely shot.''

 Debt Repayments

RBS, Barclays, Lloyds TSB and the U.K.'s three other biggest banks
need to repay as much as 54 billion pounds of debt by the end of March
2009, just as borrowing costs reach record highs.

The total, which includes bonds, convertible bonds and commercial
paper, is triple the debt repaid in the same period a year earlier.
RBS, the owner of NatWest, has about 11.5 billion pounds of
obligations coming due in the next six months, while Barclays has 15.9
billion pounds maturing, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.

``We have categorically not requested capital from the government,''
Barclays spokesman Alistair Smith said. RBS said in a statement today
it ``did not make a request to government for capital.''

Edinburgh-based RBS traded down 23 percent at 114.2 pence at 12:55
p.m. in London trading, its lowest value in 13 years. HBOS, the
country's largest mortgage lender, declined 14 percent and Lloyds TSB
dropped 7 percent. Barclays fell 1.6 percent.

 RBS Comments

``We have our feet on the ground,'' Barclays CEO John Varley said in a
speech at a Merrill Lynch Co. conference in London today. ``We
understand very clearly that the environment is difficult, and that
it's quite likely to get more difficult as economies in the world
 decelerate.''

``The outlook for 2009 is challenging,'' said Fred Goodwin at the same
conference. ``We are delivering against our plans and targets.''
Goodwin made no reference to the bank's share price.

An official in Prime Minister Gordon Brown's office had no immediate
comment. Last night, his official spokesman Michael Ellam echoed
Darling in saying the government would not be giving details of what
 it is considering.

Asked if he could confirm that Darling had met Lloyds TSB CEO Eric
Daniels, Fred Goodwin and John Varley last night, a Treasury spokesman
 said he could not.

``It would be irresponsible to speculate on the specifics of future
responses,'' Darling told Parliament last night. ``Providing a running
commentary could add to uncertainty. All practical options must remain
 open to us.''

Lloyds spokesman Mark Lidiard reiterated today that the bank will
``look at opportunities'' to raise capital and it continues to target
a capital ratio of 6 percent to 7 percent. He declined to comment on a
report by the British Broadcasting Corp. that the bank also took part
 in the government talks.

A Country in Shambles, Under GOP

The overarching reality of the country is that we've lived under
unchallenged Republican rule, and the country has virtually collapsed
 on every level.
There are few things that make political coverage more unbearable --
and more distorting -- than The David Brooks Syndrome: the extremely
patronizing and ill-informed pretense, shared by media and right-wing
elites alike, that they can study the Little Common Person like a zoo
animal, and then translate and give voice to their simple-minded, good-
hearted, salt-of-the-earth perspectives. Rarely has this mentality
been so transparent as in the wake of the Biden-Palin debate, as
pundits and right-wing polemicists like Brooks, Peggy Noonan and Rich
Starbursts Lowry rushed forward to proclaim giddily that Regular
Americans would love Sarah Palin and this love could even help McCain
win, despite -- or, really, because of -- her vapid, content-free
 telegenic presence.

Actual empirical evidence -- called polling data -- has almost
uniformly demonstrated how false these condescending pats on the head
are, as every single poll conducted thus far (at least that I'm aware
of) found that Americans believed that Biden won and is the far more
serious candidate for office, and huge numbers continue to have
profound doubts about Palin's fitness for office. And the first
tracking poll to report a full post-debate day of polling -- the
Research 2000 poll for Daily Kos -- finds Obama with a 13-point lead,
his largest ever. This joint right-wing/pundit claim that Americans
would swoon in the face of Palin's empty chatter, self-conscious
folksiness and chronic, seizure-like winking says much more about
those making the claim than it does about their Regular People
 subjects.

As polling data conclusively demonstrates, the mindset of the voting
public is infinitely more rational and substance-based than the
pundits and the Right fantasize when they lyrically praise the Regular
American -- at least it is in this time of perceived (and actual
crisis). What's happening in this country, and in this election, is
rather simple and easy to see: (1) the country is in total shambles --
possibly far worse than what people even realize; (2) we have lived
for the last eight years under virtually absolute GOP rule; (3) the
public knows this; (4) the Republican President and his party are
therefore intensely -- historically -- unpopular; and (5) the voting
public doesn't want to continue living under the rule of the same
faction and same political party that has driven the country into the
ground. Having Sarah Palin drop her gerund endings and desperately
trotting out the standard, tired GOP attack ads to depict Obama as a
 radical, fist-pumping, America-hating, unhinged socialist -- when
everyone can see with their own eyes that he isn't -- won't change any
 of that.

Hannity's Witness: Exterminate Jew Power

2008-10-07 Thread [ Republican for Obama ]

Hannity's Witness: Exterminate Jew Power
http://tpmcafe.talkingpointsmemo.com/2008/10/05/hannitys_witness_exterminate_j/
Calling the Anti-Defamation League, Bill Kristol, Charles Krauthammer,
David Brooks, and other defenders of Jewish people . slime artists
of all political persuasions:

Sean Hannity's Fox News Sunday night kitchen-sink sewer job on Barack
Obama, complete with a sound-track cribbed from C- porn flicks,
features prominently, as witness of Obama's iniquity, one Andy Martin,
author and journalist, and, though not identified as such on Fox
News, perennial political candidate in four states.

Among Martin's contributions to fairness and balance, this nifty
aphorism: I think a community organizer is someone who was in
training to overthrow the government of the United States of
America.

Martin previously crawled out from under a rock, according to Matthew
Mosk in the WP, to take credit for posting the first article to
assert that the Illinois senator was a Muslim. More recently, he
claimed, contrary to fact, that Obama, whom he called a media witch
doctor, has locked his granny away and refused to allow her to be
seen in order to pretend he has no white relatives.

Martin has been crawling beneath the rocks for quite some time.

According to no less a source than the Unification Church's impeccably
right-wing Washington Times of December 22, 1999:

In 1986, when Mr. Martin ran as a Democrat for Connecticut's 3rd
Congressional District seat under the name Anthony R. Martin-
Trigona, his campaign committee filed papers saying its purpose was
to exterminate Jew power in America and impeach U.S. District Court
of Appeals judges in New York City.
The Washington Times' reporter, Ralph Z. Hallow, went on to say: a
Connecticut federal judge finally barred him from filing any more
federal lawsuits without permission. The judge said Mr. Martin has
pursued legal actions with 'persistence, viciousness, and general
disregard for decency and logic.'

Hallow went on:

In a New York bankruptcy case, he referred to a judge as a crooked,
slimy Jew. During the bankruptcy dispute, he filed a civil-rights
lawsuit claiming Jewish bankruptcy judges and lawyers were conspiring
to steal his property. He asked a court to bar any Jew from having
anything to do with plaintiff's property.
In another motion in the case, he wrote: I am able to understand how
the Holocaust took place, and with every passing day feel less and
less sorry that it did, when Jew survivors are operating as a wolf
pack to steal my property.

According to Hallow, he ran for the Republican nomination for
governor of Florida against the incumbent, Bob Martinez, in 1990. The
Florida Republican Party disavowed him because he previously ran for
office as a Democrat and because of his anti-Semitic statements.

This is Sean Hannity's idea of a source.

Does Bill Kristol care? David Brooks? Abe Foxman?

John McCain? Sarah Palin?

Ohio Voting Law Held Unconstitutional
A citizen, whether naturalized or born in the USA, is a citizen. Ohio
nonetheless tried to impose a requirement that naturalized citizens
provide proof of citizenship before casting a ballot, if challenged by
a poll worker. How a poll worker was to distinguish between a citizen
by birth and a naturalized citizen is a mystery, but no matter. Judge
Christopher Boyko struck down the law, holding: There can be no
second-class American as far as any court is concerned. Exactly.
(More on the ridiculous law here.)

Here's the shocker. The rule was so obviously unconstitutional that,
when it was challenged in court, Ohio's notorious Secretary of State
(and now gubernatorial candidate) Ken Blackwell didn't even try to
defend it. So why didn't you refuse to enforce it from the beginning,
Mr. Blackwell?

Palins Owe Tens of Thousands of Dollars in Back Taxes

2008-10-07 Thread [ a patriotic Republican ]

http://www.electoral-vote.com/
Palins May Owe Tens of Thousands of Dollars in Back Taxes
When Sarah Palin accepted John McCain's offer to be his running mate,
she probably didn't fully realize what being in the national spotlight
meant. For example, your tax returns get to be analyzed in public (for
free) by miscellaneous tax experts. Gov. Palin actually lives in
Wasilla, a suburb of Anchorage, but the state capital is in Juneau,
500 miles away as the crow flies (assuming they have crows in Alaska).
On the many nights she stayed at home, she claimed to have been away
from the capital on business and was reimbursed $17,000 by the state
for this travel. Being paid a per diem for staying in your own home
is ethically dicey but probably legal since away on business is
probably defined as not near your office. However, Palin was also
paid $25,000 to reimburse her husband and children for being away from
home (Juneau) which she did not list as income. A D.C. tax lawyer
and two law school professors specializing in tax law have concluded
that if the State of Alaska wants to pay the governor to take her
family on business trips that is its good right, but the money
received is taxable income under the internal revenue code and the
Palins should have declared it and paid tax on it, which they did not.

State Employees will Testify in Troopergate
The Alaska attorney general has reversed himself and announced that
the seven state employees subpoenaed by retired prosecutor Steve
Branchflower will testify in the Troopergate affair. Branchflower was
hired by the Republican-controlled Alaska state legislature to
investigate potential abuse-of-power charges against Gov. Sarah Palin
in conjunction with her firing the state commissioner of public safety
for refusing to dismiss her estranged brother-in-law. In addition, the
state supreme court will hold a hearing tomorrow on a defense motion
to throw the whole case out. Branchflower is trying to get his report
out on Friday. If he concludes that Palin misused her power, it will
be a huge bombshell.

There are few things that make political coverage more unbearable --

patronizing and ill-informed pretense, shared by media and right-wing

As polling data conclusively demonstrates, the mindset of the voting
public is infinitely more rational and substance-based than the
pundits and the Right fantasize when they lyrically praise the Regular
American -- at least it is in this time of perceived (and actual
crisis). What's happening in this country, and in this election, is
rather simple and easy to see: (1) the country is in total shambles --
possibly far worse than what people even realize; (2) we have lived
for the last eight years under virtually absolute GOP rule; (3) the
public knows this; (4) the Republican President and his party are
therefore intensely -- historically -- unpopular; and (5) the voting
public doesn't want to continue living under the rule of the same
faction and same political party that has driven the country into the
ground. Having Sarah Palin drop her gerund endings and desperately
trotting out the standard, tired GOP attack ads to depict Obama as a
radical, fist-pumping, America-hating, unhinged socialist -- when
everyone can see with their own eyes that he isn't -- won't change any
of that.

Re: McCain Lawyers Push Back on Obama Keating Five Charges

2008-10-07 Thread [ a patriotic Republican ]

Is John McCain a Crook?
http://www.slate.com/id/1004633/
The controversial George W. Bush-sponsored poll in South Carolina
mentioned John McCain's role in the so-called Keating Five scandal,
and McCain says his involvement in the scandal will probably be on my
tombstone. What exactly did McCain do?

In early 1987, at the beginning of his first Senate term, McCain
attended two meetings with federal banking regulators to discuss an
investigation into Lincoln Savings and Loan, an Irvine, Calif., thrift
owned by Arizona developer Charles Keating. Federal auditors were
investigating Keating's banking practices, and Keating, fearful that
the government would seize his SL, sought intervention from a number
of U.S. senators.

The 2008 US presidential election has already been rendered
meaningless before it has even been held, because any prospect of
social programs is now to be shelved. Rather, an amount equivalent to
$2,300 for every man, woman and child in the US is to be transferred
to the wealthy. One of the first questions asked by the moderator in
the first presidential debate was: which government programs are you
advocating be cut back in view of the bailout plan? All were agreed
there would have to be cuts—that was accepted, a given.

The American ruling class cannot carry out its program democratically,
and therefore we see, in the measures proposed by Treasury Secretary
Paulson, the sinews of a dictatorship.

The initial text sent to the Congress, supposedly the legislative body
with oversight over expenditures, was barely three pages long—less
paperwork, one commentator noted in the New York Times, than was
required for a subprime mortgage!

According to the initial text, among the powers available to the
Treasury secretary, “without limitation,” will be “designating
financial institutions as financial agents of the government” able to
perform “all such reasonable duties related to this Act.” This means
that the same financial institutions that engaged in the speculative
and, in some cases, outright criminal activities that led to the
crisis, are to be called on to help the Treasury organise the bailout.
As a recent article on the WSWS noted, the term “conflict of interest”
does not even begin to cover what is taking place.

Moreover, the plan provides for legal immunity for the Treasury.
“Decisions by the secretary pursuant to the authority are non-
reviewable ... and may not be reviewed by any court of law or any
administrative agency.”

As an article in the New York Times of September 23 pointed out, with
these words “the Treasury secretary—whoever that may be in a few months
—would be vested with the most incredible powers ever bestowed on one
person over the economic and financial life of the United States. It
is the financial equivalent of the Patriot Act, after 9/11.” The Times
described Paulson’s proposed legislation as “the most amazing power
grab in the history of the American economy.”

A long established axiom of economics and politics holds that in a
crisis, real relations are laid bare, as the accidental and the
inessential are stripped away. And this is the case in this crisis.
Not government of the people, by the people and for the people; not
the “free market” in which the decisions of millions of people
determine economic outcomes; but government of, by, and for the
wealthy. Not democracy and a land of laws, but a dictatorship of
finance capital.

The wars of plunder launched by American imperialism in Afghanistan
and Iraq, the aim of which is to control oil and other resources in
the interests of US finance capital, are now being openly fought on
the home front. They will be accompanied by a deepening of the assault
on democratic rights, initiated in the so-called “war on terror.”

This is where the American working class and the working class
throughout the world will come forward and perform their historical
destiny and clear away the old order auguring in a new and wondrous
future for all mankind- Hide quoted text -

(McCain and Glenn
attended the meetings but did nothing else to influence the
regulators.) McCain was guilty of nothing more than poor

to oblivion.

McCain owes millions of American women voters an answer about birth control.

2008-10-07 Thread [ Republican for Obama ]

It's almost embarrassing to watch, isn't it?
https://secure.prochoiceamerica.org/site/Advocacy?JServSessionIdr001=mrf8v9jj71.app44bcmd=displaypage=UserActionid=3323
John McCain—ironically enough, aboard the Straight Talk Express—was
unable to answer when confronted with a simple question: Shouldn't
insurance companies be required to cover birth control if they cover
Viagra?

That was months ago, and he still hasn't answered the question
clearly. I don't know about you, but I think it's time he answers, and
next week's debate presents the perfect opportunity.

Click here to watch the video and tell debate moderator Bob Schieffer
that John McCain owes millions of American women voters an answer
about birth control.
https://secure.prochoiceamerica.org/site/Advocacy?JServSessionIdr001=mrf8v9jj71.app44bcmd=displaypage=UserActionid=3323
There's a reason John McCain certainly do[es] not want to discuss
that issue, as he stammers in the clip: Because his record shows that
he's dangerously out of touch with a nation where 98 percent of women
use birth control at some point in their lives. As recently as 2005,
McCain voted specifically against requiring insurance companies to
cover prescription birth control.

It sure looks like Sen. McCain is living up to the slogan so many of
you voted for in our bumper sticker contest: 15th Century Solutions
for the 21st Century.

Maybe Sen. McCain has done his homework and can now give a real answer
at the debate. Or maybe he's not stumped. Maybe he doesn't want to
answer because he knows his record will alienate the women voters that
will decide this election.

It's time to find out. Watch the video of McCain's birth control
straight talk and insist that he is asked: Why should men get
insurance coverage for Viagra while some women pay the full cost out-
of-pocket for prescription birth control?

This is important, Stephen. Next Wednesday's debate is the last chance
for voters to hear from the candidates in an open forum, and we can't
afford a president who's out-to-lunch on issues affecting women and
their families. That's why we must elect Sen. Barack Obama.

Once you've sent in your question for the debate, please spread the
word. Forward this message to friends and family so they can put
pressure on the debate moderator too.

Thanks for all that you do.

My best,

Nancy Keenan

Obamacrats than to elect him, even for the staunchest of Democrats.

For those who actually think Barack Obama is qualified to be
President, no amount of truth, logic or reason is going to change
their minds. To do so means having to admit they were taken in and
made fools of, and as any cop will tell you, most con men get away
with their con because their marks are so embarrassed to admit they
were taken they just keep quiet.

Obama is simply unfit to be President in any way. Whether it was
his serial lying about his relationship with Jeremiah Wright and what
he knew and when he knew it, and the fact that he was more than
willing to tolerate Wright's views of 911, and his views on race and
never felt offended enough to walk out, to his lying to the people of
Ohio about NAFTA and his other reversals and broken pledges on
everything from public financing of campaigns to FISA, he is simply
not someone you want to take home to the White House.

Aside from his dishonesty, clinical narcissism and almost
pathological lack of conscience, he has no ability to do the job he is
seeking and has never in his life ever exhibited even the smallest
evidence that he could do it. On the basis of integrity, there is
nothing to consider. Obama has no integrity and as far as we can see
 from his past, never did.

McCain on the other hand, though one can disagree with some of his
policies, has in fact demonstrated that he is willing to stand up for
what he believes, and more importantly, stand up to Republicans […]
Like it or not, the record shows McCain is the real reformer and the
real deal, while Obama is what most of the 18 million Democrats who
voted against him know him to be — a snake oil salesman who has
managed to bamboozle a lot of dumb, and impressionable people […]
especially the dumb media blonds like Keith Olbermann, Chris Matthews
and almost everyone at Newsweek, the NY times and CNN who he has
 eating out of hand.

The other thing to keep in mind about McCain is that he is rated
last by conservative groups in supporting conservative legislation.
His voting record is ranked 49th among Republican Senators by
conservative watch dog groups which is why a lot of conservatives cant
stand him. In other words, disaffected liberal Democrats who cant
possibly in good conscience vote for Obama could do a lot worse than
 bringing McCain home to mother.

How absurd is the idea of Obama as President? Think about Obama
being put in charge of the country's nuclear codes.

If I were certain America could survive four years of Obama, I'd be
tempted to lay out the conservative case for voting for him. An Obama
Administration would leave the Democrat Party in ruins for at least a
generation. Remember David Dinkins? Even ultra-liberal New York City
has never elected a Democrat Mayor since. If Dinkins led to Giuliani,
and Carter led to Reagan, Obama ought to lead to George Washington's
return from the grave. Also, imagine how people will turn on the
mainstream media once they realize the bill of goods they've been
 sold.

However, an unprincipled left-wing radical with a life-long habit of
surrounding himself with people who vehemently hate America could do
enough damage that the idea of just letting the Democrats crash the
bus and take the consequences is out of the question. Conservatives
and liberals alike have a duty to put the good of the country first by
keeping this tasteless joke away from the White House.

The overarching reality of the country is that we've lived under
unchallenged Republican rule, and the country has virtually collapsed
 on every level.
There are few things that make political coverage more unbearable --
and more distorting -- than The David Brooks Syndrome: the extremely
patronizing and ill-informed pretense, shared by media and right-wing
elites alike, that they can study the Little Common Person like a zoo
animal, and then translate and give voice to their simple-minded,
 good-
hearted, salt-of-the-earth perspectives.

American -- at least it is in this time of perceived (and actual
crisis). What's happening in this country, and in this election, is
rather simple and easy to see: (1) the country is in total shambles --
possibly far worse than what people even realize; (2) we have lived
for the last eight years under virtually absolute GOP rule; (3) the
public knows this; (4) the Republican President and his party are
therefore intensely -- historically -- unpopular; and (5) the voting
public doesn't want to continue living under the rule of the same
faction and same political party that has driven the country into the
ground. Having Sarah Palin drop her gerund endings and desperately
trotting out the standard, tired GOP attack ads to depict Obama as a
 radical, fist-pumping, America-hating, unhinged socialist -- when
everyone can see with their own eyes that he isn't -- won't change any
 of that.

Obama and ACORN: You Can Run But You Can’t Hide

2008-10-07 Thread mark

Barack Obama is running as fast and as far away from his association
with the radical group ACORN as he can, but he can’t hide from the
facts of his close relationship with the organization.

ACORN, or Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now,
describes itself as a “non-partisan” group devoted to helping the poor
and to registering millions to vote. Critics accuse ACORN of
involvement vote fraud, voter intimidation, shakedowns against
businesses, and the promotion of socialist class hatred and class
warfare.

Apparently worried by the connection between Obama and the group, his
campaign has put claims of his ties to ACORN as the lead item on its
“Fight The Smears” Web site — a site the Obama campaign created to
counter what they claim are partisan lies made up against their
candidate.

The release on the Obama site reads: “When Obama met with ACORN
leaders in November, he reminded them of his history with ACORN and
his beginnings in Illinois as a Project Vote organizer, a nonprofit
focused on voter rights and education. Senator Obama said, ‘I come out
of a grassroots organizing background. That's what I did for three and
half years before I went to law school. That's the reason I moved to
Chicago was to organize.

“So this is something that I know personally, the work you do, the
importance of it. I've been fighting alongside ACORN on issues you
care about my entire career. Even before I was an elected official,
when I ran Project Vote voter registration drive in Illinois, ACORN
was smack dab in the middle of it, and we appreciate your work.”

Indeed, Obama was being far too modest. The 2008 Democratic
presidential nominee had worked not just alongside ACORN, but also as
a key operative for the organization.

He was its lawyer in several pivotal ACORN cases.

Obama funded a number of its activities, as well. When he sat on the
board of the prestigious Woods Fund for Chicago alongside former
Weather Underground terrorist William Ayers, he oversaw and approved
many grants for ACORN.

As the National Review’s Stanley Kurtz reported, one Woods committee
report boasted that the fund’s “non-ideological” public image “enabled
the Trustees to make grants to organizations that use confrontational
tactics against the business and government ‘establishments’ without
undue risk of being accused of partisanship.”

Obama was the Illinois director of ACORN’s controversial voter
registration operation, and he trained the group’s leaders in the ways
of radical, sometimes illegal, confrontational politics.

He also paid ACORN affiliates during his recent Democratic primary
contest. For example, leading up to the 2008 Ohio Democratic Primary,
Obama’s campaign between Feb. 25 and March 17 paid Citizens Services,
Inc., a subsidiary of ACORN, $832,598, apparently for get-out-the-vote
activities.

ACORN’s four co-founders were 1960s New Leftists. One was George
Wiley, whose National Welfare Rights Organization (NWRO) members
practiced confrontation politics, e.g., swarming into welfare offices
and bullying social workers. The second ACORN co-founder was NWRO
organizer Gary Delgado.

ACORN’s other founders and longtime bosses were former Students for a
Democratic Society (SDS) activist Wade Rathke, a close NWRO ally, and
his brother Dale.

What should be done is throw every single voter registration that has ever
been submitted by a person other than the actual person registering. In
every case of voter registration the person must register in person and
provide actual proof of eligibility to vote or in the caase of those not
physically able to get to the registrar's office, a certified employee of
the registrar's office may go to the person's residence and get a completed
registeration form completed by the actual person.

to oblivion.

The overarching reality of the country is that we've lived under

on every level.
There are few things that make political coverage more
unbearable --
and more distorting -- than The David Brooks Syndrome: the
extremely
patronizing and ill-informed pretense, shared by media and
right-wing

a zoo

simple-minded, good-

been so transparent as in the wake of the Biden-Palin debate, as
pundits and right-wing polemicists like Brooks, Peggy Noonan
and Rich
Starbursts Lowry rushed forward to proclaim giddily that
Regular
Americans would love Sarah Palin and this love could even help
McCain
win, despite -- or, really, because of -- her vapid,
content-free
telegenic presence.

Actual empirical evidence -- called polling data -- has almost
uniformly demonstrated how false these condescending pats on

are, as every single poll conducted thus far (at least that I'm
aware
of) found that Americans believed that Biden won and is the far
more
serious candidate for office, and huge numbers continue to have
profound doubts about Palin's fitness for office. And the first
tracking poll to report a full post-debate day of polling -- the
Research 2000 poll for Daily Kos -- finds Obama with a 13-point
lead,
his largest ever. This joint right-wing/pundit claim that
Americans
would swoon in the face of Palin's empty chatter, self-conscious
folksiness and chronic, seizure-like winking says much more
about
those making the claim than it does about their Regular People

As polling data conclusively demonstrates, the mindset of the
voting
public is infinitely more rational and substance-based than the
pundits and the Right fantasize when they lyrically praise the
Regular
American -- at least it is in this time of perceived (and actual
crisis). What's happening in this country, and in this
election, is
rather simple and easy to see: (1) the country is in total
shambles --
possibly far worse than what people even realize; (2) we have
lived
for the last eight years under virtually absolute GOP rule; (3)
the
public knows this; (4) the Republican President and his party
are
therefore intensely -- historically -- unpopular; and (5) the
voting
public doesn't want to continue living under the rule of the
same
faction and same political party that has driven the country
into the
ground. Having Sarah Palin drop her gerund endings and

Obama-Biden communications director Dan Pfeiffer said about the
new ads: If John McCain thinks he can 'turn the page' on the economic
crisis facing American families, he is even more out of touch than we
imagined. Now there may be no good answers for John McCain due to his
erratic response to the financial crisis, but his desire to avoid
discussing the economy is something we will remind voters of everyday
for the next month- Hide quoted text -

Mythbusting Update: The Fox News Audience
via johnny dollar's place on 10/5/08

Two months ago, when Fox haters erupted over the hiring of Howard Wolfson,
we repeatedly heard a common smear:

Democrats can pretend that there are independents watching Fox News,
but the data is clear -- it is the most reliably Republican outlet in the
 nation.
Our analysis shot down that canard. The numbers showed that more Democrats
watched Fox News than either MSNBC or CNN. But Pew has a new poll out with a
slightly different breakdown in news channel viewership, and of course
ratings always fluctuate. So it's time to update our analysis to see if FNC
still has the most fair and balanced audience.

We go first to the latest findings from the Pew Research Center, whose work
is respected throughout the media. Their annual survey of cable news
 audiences now shows:

     a.. FNC: 39% Republican, 33% Democratic, 22% Independent

     b.. CNN: 18% Republican, 51% Democratic, 23% Independent

     c.. MSNBC: 18% Republican, 45% Democratic, 27% Independent

Compared to last year, all three channels have a slight uptick in their
Democratic precentage, while CNN shows a 4% drop in its GOP audience. Now we
correlate the new Pew findings with the latest primetime quarterly cable news
 ratings, issued on October 1:

     a.. FNC: 2,198,000 viewers

     b.. CNN: 1,342,000 viewers

     c.. MSNBC: 867,000 viewers

Breaking these down according to the percentages reported by Pew, we find
 the following:

     a.. FNC: 857,000 Republicans
     b.. CNN: 242,000 Republicans
     c.. MSNBC: 156,000 Republicans

     a.. FNC: 725,000 Democrats
     b.. CNN: 684,000 Democrats
     c.. MSNBC: 390,000 Democrats

     a.. FNC: 484,000 Independents
     b.. CNN: 309,000 Independents
     c.. MSNBC: 234,000 Independents

As in our previous report, we relied on the primetime audience ratings.
This time we'll also do the math with total day viewership to see if the
 patterns still hold:

     a.. FNC: 438,000 Republicans
     b.. CNN: 128,000 Republicans
     c.. MSNBC: 85,000 Republicans

     a.. FNC: 371,000 Democrats
     b.. CNN: 364,000 Democrats
     c.. MSNBC: 213,000 Democrats
     a.. FNC: 247,000 Independents
     b.. CNN: 164,000 Independents
     c.. MSNBC: 128,000 Independents

The results could not be more clear. In both total day and primetime, the
Fox News audience is far more balanced ideologically than those of the other
news channels. And once again, more Democrats watch FNC than either MSNBC or
 CNN. fox bias fnc

Bailout Blame Game

2008-10-07 Thread M.A. Johnson

Bailout Blame Game
by
Christopher
Westley | Posted on 10/7/2008
When the bailout passed last week, no one was surprised. In fact, what
looked like a principled opposition to massive legal theft on Monday was
transformed into a done backroom deal by Friday once the bill ballooned
from three to 400-plus pages, filled with crumbs that congressmen could
throw to their districts. It may be that, 25 years from now, economic
historians will note socialized credit markets came to America in
exchange for production credits for marine renewables and new
regulations for residential top-load clothes washers, which
were among many of the riders added to the bailout legislation as the
infamous week wore on.
Personally, I am still a long-term optimist, but as a student of the
Depression I know that Congress and the executive can do much damage
before the long term gets here, and indeed, they can delay its arrival
indefinitely. Will the conservatives who supported this legislation lay
into a President Obama two or three years hence, in the event that the
economy devolves into a repeat of the 1970s, thanks in large part to
government's attempt to forestall market forces over the last two weeks?
This seems likely. Our current problems resulted from the infusion of
credit in the past. To think that infusion today will not have the same
effect in the future is to challenge pesky things like natural and
economic laws.
Since societies that challenge them risk peril, I thought it may be
helpful to at least identify some of the people whose actions and ideas
helped turn the tide last week. Their numbers are many, and any list will
by necessity be abridged. Still, if the health of a society and culture
is related to the quality of the theories that are accepted, then knowing
some of the sources of bad theories is key for turning the tide back
again.
Besides, blame games can be fun. My own version involves taking a swig of

Victory Gin whenever the following names pop up in bailout
analyses.

Karl Marx
He predicted this, sort of, in the fifth plank of the
Communist Manifesto, which discusses the inevitability of
socialized capital markets in the capitalist countries. The problem is
that he believed this would happen because of inherent characteristics in
the market system, whereas in truth there is nothing within capitalism
per se that motivated Messrs. Bush, Paulson, and Bernanke. In
terms of understanding capital, Marx fails in comparison to the Austrian
Eugen von Böhm-Bawerk, while those who want to understand the underlying
forces explaining government growth would best avoid Marx and read
Böhm-Bawerk's student, Ludwig von Mises, on economic interventionism.
Nonetheless, there is great irony in the fact that, 17 years after the
fall of the Soviet Union, the United States decided that market forces
fail when it comes to capital. Somewhere, this slovenly German malcontent
must be smiling.

Lawrence Halprin
You may not know this name or how it relates to our current
mess, but rest assured, it is closely tied to it. This is because Halprin
designed the pretentious and misleading memorial to Franklin Roosevelt
that is on the National Mall in Washington, DC. Passersby learn how fear
is a great justification for government expansion, which helps inform how
the promulgation of unfounded fear was key to the bailout's success last
week. They also learn how Roosevelt's bold actions, in the
midst of the Depression helped combat it. This is also a myth. As my
Mises Institute colleague
Bob Murphy
noted in an email last week, the facts are that Roosevelt's bold
interventions prolonged the Depression, turning it into the only market
correction that is associated with an entire decade. (The Depression
actually lasted 16 years.) Yet somehow, today, questioning the Roosevelt
Myth is like pointing out that the emperor has no clothes. Halprin's
contribution in promoting this myth was poignant last week. Are there
similar shrines dedicated to Stalin (to whom FDR referred warmly as his
Uncle Joe) somewhere on the outskirts of Moscow, replete with the man in
grandfatherly pose and pet dog nearby?

Joseph Bristow
One cannot discuss the centralization of power in the 20th
century without noting the contribution of this senator from Kansas who
spearheaded the 17th Amendment into the Constitution. Before Bristow,
senators were selected by state legislators, but after him, senators were
selected through popular election. The result has been the
nationalization of senate elections, irrelevance of state legislatures,
weakening of states' constitutional check on the executive branch, and
diminution of states' rights. Given the bailout's overwhelming political
opposition, it is hard to believe that a senate that had to answer to
state legislatures would have supported this bill. Murray Rothbard once
wrote about repealing the 20th century. If this isn't possible, then we
should settle for repealing the Progressive Era instead.

Demand that Obama release his college records! Where is the media?

2008-10-07 Thread Micky

Why is it important to see Obama's college records? Because the media
has created fantasies around Obama on every issue. You should start
dispelling them with the easiest one, i.e. the fantasy of Obama's
academic degrees and honors.

Obama has been fighting desperately to block all access to his college
records. Even his academic paper at Columbia mysteriously
disappeared. The media just swallowed the official Obama's academic
degrees and honors without checking his actual grades, his scores on
standardized tests, his academic writings if any, etc. All the
decisions to admit Obama to colleges, to give him academic degrees
and honors were made by a few unknown individuals. Read about the
racial turmoil at one college where he got his academic honors. The
race tensions seem to follow Obama wherever he goes.

If Obama's college records fail to meet the requirements for
legitimate academic degrees and honors then Obama will be declared an
academic fraud. Maybe then the media will start vetting Obama on other
issues. Then we will be able to address the biggest fantasies like
Obama's ability to solve the financial crisis which requires making
executive decisions. Obama never made a single real executive decision
in his life! How will Obama be able to attract quality people if he
has a long history of attracting and being attracted to the worst
kind? Any Hollywood actor can read a teleprompter and memorize talking
points written by secret handlers.

If Obama gets elected and turns the United States into a war-torn
country like Kenya then his college records will mysteriously leak,
but then it could be too late.

I am asking everybody to request at least one major news network to
make it an election issue. Ask others to do the same. Since Obama has
built his political career around his academic degrees and honors,
all his college records (complete set of grades, scores on
standardized tests, etc) must be released. Keep in mind that Obama's
supporters have saturated media outlets and internet bandwidth for the
last two years with stories of Obama's academic degrees and honors.
Now they viciously attack those who want to see Obama's grades and
scores on standardized tests.

Obama's academic degrees and honors without checking his grades and
his scores on standardized tests are like good standing of Enron or
Fannie Mae before they collapsed. You would be surprised what racial
accusations, threats, boycotts can do to academic integrity at US
colleges!

It is Time to Revolt! (from TeenDemocrats.org)

2008-10-07 Thread Democrat

IT IS TIME TO REVOLT!

You are right: we like video games,
Ipods, sports, bikes, cars, brand names.
But we are not oblivious
When the folly of politicians
Outrageous and obvious!
Cons squandered our future
Sold out our great nation for big corporations
A coalition of grumpy corrupt old men
Weapon merchants and oilmen
Preach patriotism, talk about victory
While it is our blood being shed
While it is our future being spent
It is time to revolt!
TeenDemocrats will vote!

YESTERDAY, TODAY, TOMORROW

Yesterday, we were blinded in a holy smoke
We elected Republicans who are pros to provoke
We trusted snakes, oilmen, merchants of arms
Faith-healers, war-mongers with cunning charms

Today, we inherit an economy worse than hurricane
The culprits now have the audacity to prop up McCane
Today, we are hated abroad, looming disasters are big
Yet, they wave a plain lipstick to fool us with an old rig

Senator who cannot count the fancy houses he owns
Wants us to believe that he understands Janes and Jones
He is tough, he sings bomb, bomb, bomb; he is a hero!
He will wage seven wars with a budget far below zero

Today we are going to choose our tomorrow!
No more plunder, no more wars on the borrow!
We shall work harder, smarter; we shall unite
To peace, progress, and egality we TeenDemocrats invite!

Let's end this era that's brought far too much drama
Everyone put your hands together for Barack H. Obama!!!

The tumultuous events of today augur in the complete meltdown of the
world economy, markets will continue to spiral out of control as they
open across the world following another Wall St collapse.

As an article in the New York Times of September 23 pointed out, with
these words “the Treasury secretary—whoever that may be in a few
 months

McCain promised the country he would run a honest, respectful
and positive campaign. He broke the promise.

Both McCain and Palin are trying to link the idea of
Terrorism to Obama, they are stating that an incident that
occurred when Obama was 8 years old should be held against
 him.

An incident that occurred when he was 8 years old!

The Religious Right the base of the Republican party,
seem to only forgive the sin, when the sin is one of their
exulted leaders such as Limbaugh or Palin's Daughter.

If you are NOT one of the chosen people you are a junkie
who should get mandatory jail time or a whoring moral-less
welfare mom trying to get a free ride on tax payers.

Forget about forgiveness if you actually was penalized for
your crime and are now on another path in your life.

No that doesn't count, unless you are the Republican
Elite, then you were a victim and off limits for any comments
 about judgement.

What McCain is doing is almost equal to inciting people
 to riot.

People attending McCain and Palin rallies are now calling
Obama a terrorist and talking about assassinating him.
Both Palin and McCain are ignoring these shouts at their
rallies and by doing this are in effect condoning such potential
 actions.

This hate baiting from a Presidential candidate is unacceptable
and leads to question this individuals integrity, state of
mind and competency to govern and lead.

Someone should remind McCain he was an officer and
he should again read the Military Code of Honor. It is
clear he no longer follows it.

Dangerous move for NORAD?

 October 5, 2008
 Dangerous move for NORAD?
Michael de Yoanna and Bill Gertz THE WASHINGTON TIMES

Nestled a half mile inside a hardened rock tunnel, the Cheyenne Mountain
Operations Center buzzed with excitement on July 4, 2006, as the shuttle
Discovery prepared to launch.

Then, at approximately 1:30 p.m. during the final countdown at Florida's
Kennedy Space Center, the center's alarms and strobes shrieked to life.
Defense satellites had picked up a heat-related signature half a world away.
An expert crew at the mountain quickly identified it as a missile,
pinpointing its type, location and telemetry. It had been launched from
North Korea and was headed east. Several more missile launches were detected
including a long-range Taepodong II capable of striking the western United
States.

As the missiles advanced, the op center alerted top defense officials.
President Bush was just a phone call away and if contacted might have had
only minutes to decide whether to engage America's nuclear arsenal.
Fortunately, the missiles fell far from U.S. shores in North Korea, the Sea
of Japan and the Pacific Ocean.

Still, the episode marked the end of an era. A few weeks later, Cheyenne
Mountain's commander, Brig. Gen. Rosanne Bailey, retired and the once highly
sought command was downgraded to a directorate.

Critics say a decision two years ago to move the operations center of the
North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) to the basement of an
office building on Peterson Air Force Base in nearby Colorado Springs and to
disperse other missions at the mountain could undermine U.S. national
security.

According to military and defense sources familiar with the missions and
U.S. government documents obtained by The Washington Times, the move —
billed as a cost-cutting measure — received insufficient government review,
violated previous Pentagon directives, may have broken U.S. law and has left
the United States less able to track potential threats and the operations
center more vulnerable to attack.

We see decisions like closing Cheyenne Mountain that are driven for cost
purposes only, not military requirements, said Retired Air Force Lt. Gen.
Thomas G. McInerney. Cheyenne Mountain should remain an active facility but
cost pressures are driving combatant commanders to make riskier decisions.

The decision to move the op center originated with Adm. Timothy Keating, in
2006 head of both NORAD and U.S. Northern Command, created after 9/11 to
safeguard further the U.S. homeland. Adm. Keating apparently convinced the
nation's top military leaders that moving the center would save taxpayers
millions of dollars.

Other government officials tried to slow the process to ensure that
safeguards would be incorporated at the new site. But they were marginalized
in what critics argue was a needlessly quick campaign to place the mountain
on warm standby while scattering critical elements of the mission to
several air bases.

Adm. Keating's mantra was faster, quicker and cheaper, said one military
official familiar with Cheyenne Mountain's recent transition who asked not
to be identified because of the sensitivity of the issue. He would not let
anything stand in his way.

A spokesman for Adm. Keating, now commander of the U.S. Pacific Command,
referred questions to Northern Command.

Air Force Gen. Gene Renuart, commander of Northern Command and Norad, said
in a statement Sept. 18 in response to a Government Accountability Office
report on the transfer that he had told a closed-door briefing for the House
Armed Services Committee that he is committed to improving our security
posture to protect our command center.

Gen. Renuart said he decided to exceed the baseline security requirements
at our headquarters by implementing enhanced force protection measures. He
asserted that the move from the mountain would have more benefits than
costs. The operational advantages of this effort are numerous and
unmistakable, he said in the statement.

However, Gen. Bailey said in a telephone interview that she had a number of
concerns.

The reality is you can't make a glass building as resistant to attack as
you can a facility in a mountain, she said.

The Cheyenne operations center came on line at a time when NORAD was just
beginning to scour the skies for bombers and other threats.

In the late 1950s, Gen. Earle E. Partridge, who commanded the first version
of NORAD, feared the mission was in grave danger because it was located
inside an Ent Air Force Base building surrounded by the rapidly growing
suburbs of Colorado Springs. The New York Times quoted Gen. Partridge
fretting that one man with a well-aimed bazooka shot could obliterate
NORAD in the first wave of a nuclear battle,

On September 17, 2008, the U.S. News and World Report magazine
reportedhttp://www.usnews.com/blogs/the-ticker/2008/9/17/aig-the-biggest-bailout.htmlon
how the Federal Reserve extended an $85 billion loan to American
International Group to be paid back as AIG sells off some business in the
biggest government takeover so far in the ongoing credit crisis. What the
American public hasn't seen yet is what AIG is going to sell off in terms of
its business. According to the September 16, 2008 press
releasehttp://federalreserve.gov/newsevents/press/other/20080916a.htmby
the Federal Reserve on this bailout, the U.S. government will receive
a
79.9 percent equity interest in AIG and has the right to veto the payment of
dividends to common and preferred shareholders.

But while the U.S. taxpayers are loaning money to AIG and the U.S. holds a
nearly 80 percent equity interest in AIG, no one in the government seems
concerned that AIG is continuing to expand its Sharia finance
businesshttp://www.aigmemsa.com/aig/takaful/aboutus_launch.jsp.
Less than a week after the government bailout of AIG, Reuters
reportedhttp://www.cnbc.com/id/26834130/on how AIG's unit American
International Assurance Co (AIA) was awarded an
international takaful (Islamic insurance) license by the Malaysian
government. AIG's American International has been selling Sharia-based
Islamic insurance for at least two years, through its AIG Takaful
divisionhttp://www.aigmemsa.com/aig/takaful/aboutus_launch.jsp,
since its October 1, 2006
announcementhttp://www.boston.com/business/articles/2006/10/01/american_international_starts_islamic_insurance/,
with a stated
goalhttp://www.boston.com/business/articles/2006/10/01/american_international_starts_islamic_insurance/to
sell such Sharia financial instruments in the United States. AIG
SunAmerica, AIG Financial Services Corp, and other divisions of AIG also are
dealers http://www.amanafunds.com/dealer_list.html in Sharia mutual
trusts.

The AIG bailout came two days before Congressman Tancredo's
introductionhttp://tancredo.house.gov/PRArticle.aspx?NewsID=1386of
the Jihad
Prevention Act (H.R.
6975)http://www.unitedstatesaction.com/documents/HR6975.pdf,
which http://tancredo.house.gov/PRArticle.aspx?NewsID=1386would deny U.S.
visas to advocates of 'Sharia law, and expel Islamists already here. This
House bill has been referred to the House Committee on the Judiciary. Yet as
the AIG bailout
showshttp://www.usnews.com/blogs/the-ticker/2008/9/17/aig-the-biggest-bailout.html,
the challenge of Sharia is more than an immigration problem, and the U.S.
federal government is not yet taking any action on Sharia finance. While we
should be concerned about Islamists coming to the U.S. to promote Sharia,
shouldn't we be really concerned that the U.S. taxpayers own a nearly 80
percent equity interest in a company promoting Sharia finance today?
Shouldn't the first assets that AIG should have sold two weeks ago have been
their Sharia finance businesses?

The day before the AIG bailout was being announced, the Center for Security
Policy's (CSP) Frank Gaffney
publishedhttp://www.centerforsecuritypolicy.org/Modules/NewsManager/ShowSectionNews.aspx?CategoryID=140SubCategoryID=141NewsID=17572his
concerns about this growing financial institutional problem of
Shariah-Compliant Finance (SCF) in an article entitled Into the
Fire.http://www.centerforsecuritypolicy.org/Modules/NewsManager/ShowSectionNews.aspx?CategoryID=140SubCategoryID=141NewsID=17572
In his article, Mr. Gaffney references David Yerushalmi's study Shari'ah's
Black Box: Civil Liability and Criminal: Exposure Surrounding
Shari'ah-Compliant
Finance,http://www.centerforsecuritypolicy.org/modules/newsmanager/center%20publication%20pdfs/shairias%20black%20box%20%28d%20yerushalmi%29.pdfwhich
details the lack of financial transparency inherent in Sharia finance,
and how such lack of transparency could lead to financial institutions being
used to support terrorism and reverse money laundering. Moreover, as Mr.
Gaffney
stateshttp://www.centerforsecuritypolicy.org/Modules/NewsManager/ShowSectionNews.aspx?CategoryID=140SubCategoryID=141NewsID=17572,
the current financial crisis will allow Islamist nations to buy up engines
of our capital markets for pennies on the dollar, and [w]orse yet, they
are, in the process, putting themselves in a position to promote
Shariah-Compliant Finance and the seditious theo-political agenda it
serves.

Sharia finance http://www.shariahfinancewatch.org/blog/ is not just

I'll bet against you. McCain has a few very serious hurdles I don't
think he can clear;

- People are fed up with Bush and Obama has successfully
interconnected McCain and Bush.
- The Palin smear campaign has worked. Eventually, even the SNL skits
take their toll.
- The MSM bias is too great to overcome and most people don't seem
capable of critical thinking on their own.
- McCain and the Republicans don't seem to have a clue how to attack

I'll go so far as to say it will be a electoral college landslide
(popular vote won't be as overwhelming) and the MSM will be talking

European stock markets in freefall following Paris financial summit

By Peter Schwarz
7 October 2008

The response of European stock markets to the crisis summit held in
Paris on Saturday could have not been clearer. On Monday, share prices
across Europe plummeted.

The Dax (Frankfurt) lost 7 percent, the TecDax 11 percent, the FTSE
100 (London) 8 percent and the CAC 40 (Paris) 9 percent. In Iceland,
share trading was halted altogether. Following the nationalisation of
the country’s third biggest bank, the government itself was threatened
with bankruptcy.

The government heads of the four European members of the G8—France,
Germany, Great Britain and Italy—met on Saturday in Paris to discuss
common action to combat the financial crisis. The results of the
summit were negligible.

The assembled leaders agreed—in the words of French President Nicolas
Sarkozy, who called the summit—that “every country would resort to its
own measures.” A proposal to set up a common fund to bail out ailing
banks along the lines of the American Paulson plan failed to appear on
the summit agenda following opposition from Germany.

Over the weekend, a series of events made clear the extent to which
Europe, and especially Germany, has been hit by the international
financial turbulence.

On Saturday, the plan drawn up a week ago by the German government and
a number of banks to rescue Hypo Real Estate (HRE), Germany’s second
biggest mortgage lender, collapsed. The German central bank
(Bundesbank) and private banks had planned to make €35 billion
available to prop up HRE, a DAX company with total assets of €400
billion. For its part, the German government issued a surety loan of
€26.5 billion in taxpayer money.

On Saturday, the private banks withdrew from the bailout plan after it
emerged that the financial problems at HRE were much greater than
originally presented. Losses by the bank are estimated at between €50
and €60 billion this year, and could climb to over €100 billion next
year.

The banks neither informed the German government of their new estimate
of HRE’s financial problems, nor of their intention to quit the rescue
package. Angry government leaders first learned of the situation from
a press statement issued by HRE.

HRE attempted to blame German Finance Minister Peer Steinbrück (Social
Democratic Party—SPD) for its new problems because Steinbrück had
spoken of a “liquidation” of the bank. Evidently, the banks are
attempting to pressure the government to make more funds available for
bailouts.

On Sunday, further crisis talks were held to draw up a new bailout
plan for HRE. The government took the situation so seriously that on
the same afternoon Chancellor Angela Merkel (Christian Democratic Union
—CDU) and Finance Minister Steinbrück held a joint press conference to
announce a government guarantee for all private savings in Germany.
“The deposits of savers are safe, the government gives its assurance”
Merkel declared.

The declaration of a guarantee had two aims: To appease public anger
over the government’s decision to make billions of euros available to
cover the banks’ speculative losses, under conditions where ordinary
savers faced the loss of their savings, and to avert a panic run on
the banks similar to that which took place in Germany in 1931.

The seriousness with which the situation is regarded by ruling circles
was reflected in comments made by Interior Minister Wolfgang Schäuble
(CDU). In the latest edition of Der Spiegel magazine, Schäuble drew
direct parallels to the economic crisis of the 1920s and 1930s and
warned: “Such an economic crisis can result in an incredible threat to
all of society. The consequences of that depression was Adolf Hitler
and, indirectly, World War II and Auschwitz

Instead of calming the situation, the government’s promise to
guarantee deposits has heightened fears by revealing the scale of the
crisis. The German government has committed itself to cover an almost
unlimited amount. According to government data, the guarantee will
include private bank assets worth some €568 billion—twice as much as
the entire annual federal budget. By some calculations, the various
forms of savings total €4.5 trillion.

Spiegel Online commented: “Merkel and Co. have nothing more to
increase their promises to savers. There are no reserves should the
German financial system collapse... if the state really does have to
compensate for lost deposits beyond the legal guarantee of €20,000 and
the private banks’ deposit guarantee fund the state debt will rise for
years, capital spending will fall, social welfare systems will be
additionally burdened.”

The guarantee issued by the German government met with harsh criticism
from other European capitals, particularly London. At the Paris
summit, the Irish government was criticised for giving similar
assurances for its six leading banks. Now the German government was
doing the same thing.

The Guardian described the “anger” in Downing Street over Merkel’s

Weather Underground Forerunners of Our Potential Next Administration

Jonah Goldberg provides background on the Weather Underground, led by
the unrepentant William Ayers, whose political protégé may soon be
given America's nuclear codes:

Bourgeois self-loathing lay at the very heart of the New Left's
hatred of liberalism, its love affair with violence, and its
willingness to take a sledgehammer to Western civilization. We're
against everything that's 'good and decent' in honky America,
declared one rebel. We will burn and loot and destroy. We are the
incubation of your mother's worst nightmare. The Weathermen became
the storm troopers of the New Left, horrifying even those who agreed
with their cause. Convinced that all whites were born tainted with the
original sin of skin privilege, the fighting brigade of the New Left
internalized racialist thinking as hatred of their own whiteness. All
white babies are pigs, declared one Weatherman. On one occasion the
feminist poet Robin Morgan was breast-feeding her son at the offices of
the radical journal Rat. A Weatherwoman saw this and told her, You
have no right to have that pig male baby. How can you say that?
Morgan asked. What should I do? Put it in the garbage, the
Weatherwoman answered.

Sounds like a certain Illinois State Senator's attitude toward babies
who survive botched abortions.

Bernadine Dohrn [Ayers' wife], an acid-loving University of
Chicago law student turned revolutionary, reflected the widespread New
Left fascination with the serial-killing hippie Übermensch Charles
Manson. Dig It! First they killed those pigs, then they ate dinner in
the same room with them, they even shoved a fork into a victim's
stomach! Wild! In appreciation, her Weather Underground cell made a
three-fingered fork gesture its official salute.

Why not just put Charles Manson in the White House? At least he can be
charismatic even without a teleprompter.

Obama Supporters Dahsudhu Hdusahfd and Uadhshgu Hduadh Give Generously

2008-10-07 Thread mark

If you thought the penniless Chinese dishwashers donating $thousands
to Shrillary smelled funny, put a clothespin on your nose before
reading about Obama's donors:

CBS News has learned that two donors to the Obama campaign that
gave a total of $7,722 appear to have made their contributions under
fake names that look like they were written by a mouse running across
a keyboard: Dahsudhu Hdusahfd of Df, Hawaii with the following
employer CZXVC/ZXVZXV and Uadhshgu Hduadh listed as living in Dhff,
Florida listed their employer as DASADA/SAFASF.

CBS News did not find any records of these last names, towns or
employers anywhere else. Newsweek reported two questionable Obama
donors over the weekend named Doodad Pro and Good Will.

Contributions from the two donors Hdusahfd and Hduadh were made on
the same day starting on July 16, 2008. Federal Election Commission
(FEC) records show the campaign began refunding the donations as early
as August 6, 2008.

Despite numerous refunds from the Obama campaign, Hdusahfd still
has a record of giving a total of $7500 to Obama which is well over
the legal limit for the primary and general election of $4600.

Having been caught with its hand in the cookie jar…

The Obama campaign says out of an abundance of caution all of
these donations are in the process of being returned.

If even CBS News can't help but notice election fraud in the Obama
campaign, imagine what will eventually come to light when this whole
nightmarish farce is over — provided of course that Obama loses.
Otherwise, we'll know as much on January 20 as we'll ever be able to
learn.

US stocks tumbled for a fifth session, capping the Dow's biggest five-
day point loss ever

October 8, 2008 - 8:02AM

US stocks tumbled for a fifth straight session, capping the Dow's
biggest five-day point loss ever, as fears mounted that the spiraling
credit crisis would drag the economy into a deep recession.
Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke did little to reassure markets
when he cautioned that downside risks to economic growth have
worsened, though he did signal a readiness to lower interest rates. An
earlier move by the Federal Reserve to unclog the commercial paper
market, which companies use to fund their day-to-day operations, gave
the stock market only a fleeting boost.
The financial sector was the biggest drag on the market, with the SP
financial sub-index dropping to its lowest level in more than a
decade.
Bank of America skidded 26.2% the day after it said it would cut its
dividend and raise $US10 billion to help staunch rising loan losses.
''The market can't seem to find a footing, no matter what the
government or the Fed tells them. We're in uncharted territory and we
don't know how that is going to end,'' said Linda Duessel, market
strategist at Federated Investors.
''We've all been shellshocked by the momentum on the downside in this
market, and now people are talking about a long and deep recession -
just a month ago, many thought a recession could be averted.''
The Dow Jones industrial average fell 508.39 points, or 5.11%, to
9447.11. The blue-chip Dow average has lost more than 1400 points over
the past five sessions, or nearly 13% of its value, according to
Reuters data.
The Standard Poor's 500 Index dropped 60.66 points, or 5.74%, to
996.23 - the first time the benchmark index has closed below the 1000
level in more than five years. The drop was the SP 500's biggest five-
day percentage decline since the 1987 crash.
The Nasdaq Composite Index slid 108.08 points, or 5.80%, to 1754.88.
The losses came a day after a steep global equity market sell-off and
traders said there was some disappointment that central banks had not
orchestrated a coordinated interest-rate cut to calm financial
markets.
The US Federal Reserve stepped forward as a commercial lender of last
resort as governments around the world scrambled to stem the global
financial crisis and calls arose for concerted action. The Fed created
a new commercial paper facility that would buy short-term, highly
rated debt, stepping into the corporate debt market in a program that
falls outside the $US700 billion rescue plan approved by the US
Congress on Friday.
Morgan Stanley shares fell as much as 40%, before rebounding to close
down 24.9% at $US17.65, after a company spokesman said its deal to
sell up to 24.9% of its voting shares to Japanese bank Mitsubishi UFJ
Financial Group was on track to close ''imminently''.

The drop in financials came on the eve of the lifting of the ban on
short selling in a raft of financial companies or companies with
financial exposure. Short sellers borrow stocks and sell them on the
bet that the stocks will fall in value, so that they can buy them back
at a lower price and pocket the difference.

The price of US front-month crude oil rose $US2.25, or 2.6%, to settle
at $US90.06 a barrel, fueling concerns about consumer and business
spending. An index of airline stocks fell 15.6%.

Trading volume was low on the New York Stock Exchange, with about 1.73
billion shares changing hands, below last year's estimated daily
average of roughly 1.90 billion, while on Nasdaq, about 2.82 billion
shares traded, above last year's daily average of 2.17 billion.

Declining stocks outnumbered advancing ones by 7 to 1 on the NYSE and
on the Nasdaq, by about 6 to 1.

European stock markets in freefall following Paris financial summit

What would that be?
Things like this?

Last week new evidence arose revealing that under Palin's
administration, Wasilla cut funds that paid for the rape kits and
shifted the burden onto the victims themselves or their insurance
companies (kits generally cost between $500-$1200). Under Wasilla
Police Chief Irl Stambaugh, the town had included the cost of rape
kits in the budget. But Palin fired Stambaugh and replaced him with
Charlie Fannon, who then took the money out of the budget - a budget
Palin approved. Fannon evidently did not have a problem with billing
victims, though he admitted that he would rather see the perpetrator
pay for the rape kits (without elaborating on how that realistically
or successfully might occur).

The town law did not change until Alaska state legislators got wind of
what was happening (in Wasilla and other small towns) and introduced a
bill, signed into law in 2000, making it illegal for any law
enforcement agency to bill victims or victims insurance companies for
the costs of examinations that take place to collect evidence of a
sexual assault or determine if a sexual assault did occur.

Fannon immediately objected, stating in an article on May 23, 2000
that ...the law will require the city and communities to come up with
more funds to cover the costs of the forensic exams...I just don't
want to see any more burdens on the tax payer. Fannon did not explain
why rape victims should pay for their evidence collection kits while
victims of burglary, for example, would not.

It is
clear he no longer follows it.- Hide quoted text -
