Democrat walks back comment that Kim Jong-un ‘more responsible’ than Trump

Rep. Keith Ellison <http://thehill.com/person/keith-ellison> (D-Minn.)
backed away from an earlier claim that President Trump was acting more
irresponsibly than North Korea leader Kim Jong Un
<http://thehill.com/person/kim-jong-un> during escalating rhetoric between
Washington and Pyongyang.

“That was one of those I wish I’d not said,” Ellison, who also serves as
the deputy chair of the Democratic National Committee, told The Washington
Post

shortly after he made the accusation.

“It’s tailor-made for somebody to misuse," he added. "I’d say
[Trump's] being incredibly irresponsible and he’s putting us in a situation
where you could have an accidental launch. I mean, his rhetoric might make
Kim Jong Un think that he needs to strike first. What we need is someone
bringing calm to the situation, not spiking it.”

During an appearance at the Netroots Nation conference in Atlanta Friday,
Ellison addressed the recent exchange of inflammatory rhetoric between
Trump and North Korea, saying North Korean leader Kim Jong Un was acting
more responsibly than the U.S. president.

“You have this guy making bellicose threats against somebody else who has
very little to lose over there,” Ellison said, according to the Post. “Kim
Jong Un – the world always thought he was not a responsible leader. Well,
he’s acting more responsible than this guy.”

Tensions between the U.S. and North Korea have risen to their highest point
of Trump's presidency in recent days.

The United Nations Security Council, with encouragement from the U.S., voted
unanimously

the beginning of August to impose new sanctions against North Korea in
retaliation for the regime's recent intercontinental ballistic missile
tests.

Following that vote, reports indicated that the country has developed a
miniaturized nuclear warhead capable of fitting on a missile.

Trump responded to that development by threatening to unleash "fire and
fury" on North Korea if it continued to threaten the U.S. Since then, Trump
has exchanged threats with North Korea, which said Wednesday that its
military would have plans in place by mid-August to attack waters near the
U.S. territory of Guam.
