Since then, the situation has only worsened further -- *people in city streets are hunting down dogs, cats, and pigeons for food. *According to the *PanAm Post <https://panampost.com/sabrina-martin/2016/05/04/in-venezuela-residents-resort-to-hunting-dogs-on-the-street/>* : Ramón Muchacho, Mayor of Chacao in Caracas, said the streets of the capital of Venezuela are filled with people killing animals for food. Through Twitter, Muchacho reported that in Venezuela, it is a “painful reality” that people “hunt cats, dogs and pigeons” to ease their hunger. People are also reportedly gathering vegetables from the ground and trash to eat as well. The crisis in Venezuela is worsening everyday due in part to shortages reaching 70 percent […] six Venezuelan military officials were arrested for stealing goats to ease their hunger, as there was no food at the Fort Manaure military base. And as desperate people increasingly turn to crime, their victims are exacting vigilante mob justice. As reported by the *Daily Mail* <http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3525921/Brutal-justice-mob-Mugger-beaten-floor-burned-alive-lynch-mob-stealing-people-street-Caracas.html>, Roberto Fuentes Bernal, 42, was caught trying to mug passersby in the streets of Caracas. Before police arrived at the scene, the crowd took the law into their hands by surrounding Bernal, taking turns beating and kicking him, then *burning him alive*. Bernal was taken to a nearby hospital and is receiving treatment for burns covering 70% of his body. Aimed at drastically curtailing carbon emissions into the atmosphere, the goal is to rein in the carbon footprints of the planet’s two major polluters, the U.S. and China. *I wonder if the agreement contains anything about carbon paw prints.* *While humans and their ravenous appetite for growth remain the primary drivers of climate change and the accompanying specter of climate catastrophe, pets have a surprising negative impact of their own.* Bowser and Mittens may be your best friends, but with around one billion pet dogs and cats in the world, eating billions of pounds of canned meat a year producing half a billion pounds of waste daily, *Mother Nature might just consider them to be—after humans—Public Enemy Number Two*. Cats and dogs eat meat-based diets, and we all know that is the most energy intensive diet there is. *Then there is the staggering amount of bacteria-laden fecal material these beloved creatures produce.* American dogs alone are responsible for 10 million tons of waste a year. *Can anything be done to make our pets more planet-friendly? * [image: baby] <https://fellowshipofminds.files.wordpress.com/2014/11/baby.jpg> *The Carbon Paw Print* You consider yourself an environmentalist and are considering ditching that gas-guzzling SUV you bought a few years ago in order to reduce your carbon footprint. *You might want to think of ditching Bowser instead.* An average-sized dog consumes about 360 pounds of meat in a year and about 210 pounds of cereal. Taking into account the amount of land it takes to generate that amount of food and the energy used, *that makes your dog quite the carbon hound*. A 2009 study by New Zealand’s Victoria University of Wellington concluded that* pet dogs have carbon paw prints double that of a typical SUV*. John Barrett of the Stockholm Environment Institute, in York, Great Britain, confirmed the results of the New Zealand study. *"Owning a dog really is quite an extravagance, mainly because of the carbon footprint of meat,"* Barrett told New Scientist Magazine. OK, so maybe Bowser needs to go. How about Mittens? Well, Mittens is better than Bowser, but *she still leaves a carbon paw print equal to that of driving a compact car for a solid year*. The average carbon paw print of our dog or cat is higher than an average human from countries like Haiti or Afghanistan. [image: pet3] <https://fellowshipofminds.files.wordpress.com/2014/11/pet3.jpg> *While we love our pets, they share our propensity to wreak havoc on the world, and not just by generating carbon.* In Great Britain, for example, there are around 8 million cats who yearly kill (conservatively estimated) around 200 million wild animals, including many threatened songbirds and other species. That’s around 25 kills per feline. (Cat owners can dramatically reduce this carnage by keeping their pets indoors or by *requiring them to wear CatBibs <http://catgoods.com/> when they are outside*.) *We’ve Seen the Enemy and They Are Us* *The real problem, of course, is not Bowser or Mittens. It’s us.* Robert Vale, co-author with Brenda Vale of *Time to Eat the Dog? The Real Guide to Sustainable Living*, writes that, *“it's not really going to be that much of a problem if you have a big dog but also take the bus everywhere, never fly and live in a small home*. *It's when everyone starts to have a big car, big house, big family and a big dog that the problems start."* Humans have been living with companion pets for 12,000 years. For most of that time, the pets had a purpose in the household: to kill rodents, herd sheep, act as guards. If not left to outright fend for themselves, they were fed table scraps we didn’t want; a bone here, a fish head there. In modern society, however, our pets are members of our families, and we don’t feed beloved family members food waste. [image: money1] <https://fellowshipofm

Stewart (born Jonathan Stuart Leibowitz) uses his TV show as a Super PAC platform to carry water for Obama by attacking Mitt Romney's wealth and the extravagance of the “one-percenters.” But Stewart himself is a 1% multi-millionaire who makes more than 300 times the median American salary and owns three luxury homes that he hides under fake names! You see, Jon Stewart doesn’t technically own those homes. Using a trick mastered by countless one-percenters, the properties were purchased by private trusts *named after his pets. *The super-wealthy often make big-ticket purchases through trusts in order to protect their other assets from lawsuits, diminish estate tax liability, and avoid public scrutiny. Stewart also sometimes doesn’t pay his taxes. The state of New York issued its first “state tax warrant” for Stewart’s failure to pay $476.03, sending the notice to the address of the KLS Professional Advisors Group, the financial firm that manages Stewart’s money. In September 2008, New York issued a second lien, this time a $3,225.63 demand to Stewart’s wife Tracy, which was sent to the address of the Stewarts’ trusts. The Daily Caller has done some excellent reporting on this<http://dailycaller.com/2012/06/17/jon-stewart-mocks-rich-romney-while-outpacing-him-in-wealth/>. You'll want to read the full report. Stewart, age 49, is worth an estimated $80 million. At his current earning rate, Stewart's net worth will be $320 million (not including increases in property value or other assets) by the time he turns 65 -- Mitt Romney’s current age. In other words, for all his attacks on Romney's wealth, Stewart is on pace to be richer than Romney. *~Eowyn* *Dr. Eowyn <http://fellowshipofminds.wordpress.com/author/eowyn2/>* | June 21, 2012 at 9:04 am | Tags: Daily Show<http://fellowshipofminds.wordpress.com/?tag=daily-show>, Mitt Romney <http://fellowshipofminds.wordpress.com/?tag=mitt-romney>, one-percenters <http://fellowshipofminds.wordpress.com/?tag=one-percenters>, tax shelters of the super-wealthy<http://fellowshipofminds.wordpress.com/?tag=tax-shelters-of-the-super-wealthy>, vagina manger <http://fellowshipofminds.wordpress.com/?tag=vagina-manger> | Categories: Animals <http://fellowshipofminds.wordpress.com/?cat=817426>, Culture War <http://fellowshipofminds.wordpress.com/?cat=20812>, Liberals/Democrats<http://fellowshipofminds.wordpress.com/?cat=74187125>, Media <http://fellowshipofminds.wordpress.com/?cat=292>, Religion<http://fellowshipofminds.wordpress.com/?cat=4983159>, Republican Party <http://fellowshipofminds.wordpress.com/?cat=56189>, Taxes<http://fellowshipofminds.wordpress.com/?cat=34919470>, United States <http://fellowshipofminds.wordpress.com/?cat=5850> | URL: http://wp.me/pKuKY-fck Comment<http://fellowshipofminds.wordpress.com/2012/06/21/jon-stewart-conceals-his-wealth-under-pets-names/#respond> See all comments<http://fellowshipofminds.wordpress.com/2012/06/21/jon-stewart-conceals-his-wealth-under-pets-names/#comments> Unsubscribe or change your email settings at Manage Subscriptions<https://subscribe.wordpress.com/?key=80d8873ee52adffe4e178d01c25562cf&email=goosepickles%40gmail.com>. *Trouble clicking?* Copy and paste this URL into your browser: http://fellowshipofminds.wordpress.com/2012/06/21/jon-stewart-conceals-his-wealth-under-pets-names/ Thanks for flying with WordPress.com <http://wordpress.com/> -- Thanks for being part of "PoliticalForum" at Google Groups. UNUSUAL HISTORICAL PETS:
*Some Historical Characters and their Unusual Pets<http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/TheListUniverse/~3/vwTQVcvA7Vg/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=email> * *<https://feedads.g.doubleclick.net/~a/sKb7o9dSAj1yCvLASYw9zZJU0jw/pFcA57shCQUcal47Fro1aL8MfMI/1/pa> * *Many famous historical characters have had famous animal companions; however, some others didn’t settle for mere dogs or cats as companions. Here’s a list of some of the most unusual pets in History.* ** * 10* *Pope Leo X* *White elephant* *[image: Leox]* *In many parts of south eastern Asia, white elephants (an extremely rare color variety of the Asiatic elephant, rather than a separate species) were thought to be sacred, an omen of good fortune and symbol of all things royal and/or divine. * * Pope Leo X (who was a member of the powerful Medici family, and the last non-priest to be crowned Pope), is said to have received a white elephant, named Hanno, as a gift on his coronation; it was given to him by King Manuel I of Portugal, who had probably acquired it via his viceroy in India. The elephant was sent from Lisbon to Rome, in 1514, along with his two trainers, and made a great impression among locals. Hanno was well trained and extremely intelligent, able to understand and obey orders given to him both in Indian and Portuguese. * * Before being presented in the Pope’s court, Hanno was kept at the villa of a powerful cardinal; people were so eager to see the beast that they even attempted to break into the cardinal’s property. Hanno quickly became the Pope’s favorite pet; a special enclosure was built for him near the Holy Father’s residence, and he was paraded during the most important ceremonies in Rome. * * Unfortunately, Hanno didn’t adapt well to his new home; three years after his arrival to Rome, he became ill. The Pope had his finest doctors treat him but unfortunately, their remedy (a purgative containing gold) was even worse than the disease, and it killed the hapless elephant. He was buried in the Cortille del Belvedere, and the Pope had Raphael himself paint a commemorative fresco of Hanno (now, unfortunately, lost). The Pope also wrote a poem dedicated to his pet, regretting his untimely death (elephants can live up to 70 years, but Hanno didn’t even make it to seven). * ** * 9* *Ivan the Terrible* *Bears* *[image: Ivan The Terrible-Pic]* *Ivan the Terrible, famous as one of History’s most brutal rulers, was famous for having people executed in diverse, exceedingly cruel ways, such as impaling, drowning, strangling, and even roasting or frying or being buried alive. However, one of his first and favorite methods for dispatching people was having them mauled to death by bears. * *It is often said that he kept two or more bears in special “dens” in his castle, and that they were deliberately underfed. Ivan would sometimes throw prisoners to the animals, or even turn the bears loose on innocent pedestrians just for the fun of it. Although sometimes called “pet bears” by some authors, it is likely that Ivan had no affective bond with these animals, whatsoever; it is known that he was actually very cruel to animals from his early years, and wasn’t above hunting wild bears for sport; therefore it makes more sense that he kept the bears merely as intimidating executioners… kind of like a James Bond villain. * * He was not the only ruler in History known to have kept bears; US president Thomas Jefferson kept two grizzly bear cubs, and the same is said of Calvin Coolidge. But perhaps the earliest ruler with a soft spot for bears was Ptolemy II, king of Egypt from 285 to 246 BC, who is said to have been very fond of a “white bear” he kept in his private collection, so much in fact that he would have the animal be at the very front of parades during festivities (although whether he felt true affection for it, or just used it as an impressive symbol of his power is up to debate).* * This “white bear” is often considered to have been the first captive polar bear in History, but some experts believe it may have been a Syrian brown bear, which often has a very light colored coat and was native to Egypt and surrounding countries in ancient times. * ** * 8* *Josephine Bonaparte* *Orangutan and others* *[image: Josephine]* *Napoleon Bonaparte’s first wife was, like many French aristocrats at the time, fond of exotic pets. Her personal favorite was a female orangutan, which was even allowed to join her owner at the table during meals (the ape’s favorite treat being turnips). The orangutan was beautifully dressed in a white cotton chemise, and was seemingly very well behaved in front of guests. Josephine was also fond of dogs; her most famous dog, Fortune (a pug), was used by the Empress to send secret messages to her family while she was being kept prisoner at Les Carnes (since Fortune was the only one allowed to visit Josephine). * * According to a certain story, Napoleon even had to accept Fortune in his bed, against his will, b

Dogs are considered "unclean" under Islamic tradition but, while relatively rare in Iran, some people do keep them as pets. By issuing a fatwa -- a religious ruling -- Grand Ayatollah Naser Makarem Shirazi has sent a clear message that this trend must stop. "Friendship with dogs is a blind imitation of the West," he was quoted as saying in Javan daily. "There are lots of people in the West who love their dogs more than their wives and children." Guard dogs and sheep dogs are considered acceptable under Islamic law but Iranians who carry dogs in their cars or take them to public parks can be stopped by police and fined. The Koran does not explicitly prohibit contact with dogs, Shirazi said, but Islamic tradition showed it to be so. "We have lots of narrations in Islam that say dogs are unclean." The interpretation of religious rules on personal conduct is a constant source of debate and potential conflict in Iran which has been an Islamic republic since a revolution ousted the Western-backed Shah in 1979. In a television interview last week, President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad weighed in on the issue of the Islamic dress code, saying women who fail to cover their hair completely should not be harassed by the police. Morality police are conducting their annual crackdown and women who reveal strands of hair are liable to be stopped in the streets for failing to respect the dress code, or "hijab." Ahmadinejad's surprisingly liberal view was condemned by fellow hard-liner politicians and senior clerics "I wish he had not said those words about the hijab," Grand Ayatollah Ahmad Jannati told the faithful during the week's Friday prayers, in a rare criticism of the president. "We are grappling with many problems including economic and political ones but the issues of morality and ethical security are among the important issues that cannot be ignored," he said. Tehran University has set up a thinktank "to investigate the problems related to hijab," the representative of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei to the university announced on Monday. -- Thanks for being part of "PoliticalForum" at Google Groups. PETA Kills 95% of Adoptable Pets in Its Care
Despite all the sanctimonious demands that we ban circuses, lab animals, and hamburgers, the militants at PETA are no friends of animals: People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) killed 95 percent of the adoptable pets in its care during 2008. Despite years of public outrage over its euthanasia program, the animal rights group kills an average of 5.8 pets every day at its Norfolk, VA headquarters. According to public records from the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, PETA killed 2,124 pets last year and placed only seven in adoptive homes. Since 1998, a total of 21,339 dogs and cats have died at the hands of PETA workers. Despite having a $32 million budget, PETA does not operate an adoption shelter. PETA employees make no discernible effort to find homes for the thousands of pets they kill every year. Last year, the Center for Consumer Freedom petitioned Virginia’s State Veterinarian to reclassify PETA as a slaughterhouse. So if PETA doesn't really care about animals, what's the point? The same as always with the left: control over our lives for its own sake, thinly disguised by phony self-righteous posturing. http://www.moonbattery.com/ --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ Thanks for being part of "PoliticalForum" at Google Groups.
