ncmpc character conversion problem

After reading ncmpc(1) (especially the NOTE section), googling, and searching the ports@openbsd.org archives, I still can't get ncmpc to do conversion from UTF-8 to ASCII. If anyone got this working, I'm very interested in advice or just a simple hint. ncmpc shows this error message in the bottom
