You could install Chrome and try the Docs PDF/PowerPoint viewer.
That did the trick, though Chromium barely qualifies as less bloated than
Libreoffice! It will only open files from the net, Chromium addons are not
allowed to open local files

If I make search the ports tree for powerpoint or ppt only catdoc and xlhtml
come up, and these both lose the formatting.
