Typically from xdm. I did try starting from the command line where
my .xinitrc contained exec
Thanks to Gonzalo letting me try out his .spectrwm.conf file I was
able to figure out the issue. In Gonzalo's configuration there was
autorun = ws[1]:xrandr -s 1366x768
My configuration didn't have this. Gonzalo's configuration file
allowed spectrwm to run as a usable window manager
