For those wishing to know: In his book "Bohemian Days" Mackay makes many claims and tells many stories, carefully omitting enough details to make them unproveable. I therefore followed up one of his claims, that he started a career in journalism by writing a review of T. W. Robertson's play "School". This is Mackay's review, his account of writing it, the letters from the Times which occasioned it, and a review published prior to Mackay's. The upshot is that this claim from Bohemian Days stands proved.
