Some alternatives might be to use one of the commercial bulk mail
providers such as:
Sendgrid
AmazonSES
MailGun
I use mailersend.com for transactional emails for Reverse.net. Other
options include buying a $5 KVM and self hosting a public relay for
outbound only.

In order to help others that could find this issue, at the end we used
mb2md tool, within a script to recover mails from mbox format to a temp
dir, and then copy them with the appropiate permissions into ~/Maildir/cur
