Giant Oarfish found after 131 years Jansson measuring the Giant Oarfish at The House of the Sea aquarium A 3.7-metre Giant Oarfish - the world's largest bony fish - has been found in Swedish waters for the first time in 131 years. Also known as the "King of Herrings", the dead fish was picked up by a west coast resident who found it floating near the shore last week. It was handed over to The House of the Sea aquarium in the town of Lysekil, where marine expert Roger Jansson says it's being kept pending a decision on what to do with it. Jansson told the Associated Press that the Giant Oarfish can grow up to 11-metre and is believed to live in deep waters. Oarfish is a deep-water fish that lives 3,000-metre below the ocean surface. It is rarely sighted alive. In Asian countries such as China and Japan, sightings of the fish in shallow waters are seen as bad omens preceding an earthquake. Scientists believed the fish will only swim to shallow waters when there is a big change of temperature before an earthquake. - AP Published May 15 2010 [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]
