The instructions I gave for enabling the keyboard were oriented to the
2.x android device I own. I explicitly targetted a low-numbered
version of android to guarantee the widest distribution.

What version of android are you running? If it is, as I suspect,
v4.x, then the text colour is an oversight which has been noted and I
expect to be fixed in the next release.

I am not sure how you reconfigure the apple keyboard, but there is another
workaround.
Go back to the numeric keypad in '123' mode and touch and hold the quote key.
After about a second other options of the quote will appear, one of which is
the back tick, just slide your finger alo
