THE US has advised its citizens in Indonesia to take extra security precautions against possible terrorist attacks in the run up to Islam's biggest festival of Eid al-Fitr next month. The US embassy in Jakarta continues to receive reports that terrorist organisations could attempt to carry out attacks against identifiably US or other Western facilities or businesses in Indonesia, the State Department said. In a message, the embassy reminded US nationals in Indonesia "to observe vigilant personal security precautions and to remain aware of the continued potential for terrorist attacks against Americans or American interests in Indonesia and worldwide". It cautioned Americans to avoid all stand-alone bars, clubs or nightclubs, which could be attacked by protesters in Indonesia, the world's most populous Muslim nation. The Muslim fasting month of Ramadan began October 15 and culminates in November with the Eid al-Fitr celebrations. Last week, a large group from the Islamic Defenders Front (FPI) forced their way into the Star Deli and Star Bar in South Jakarta, smashing the front window and destroying a drink display case, photos of entertainers and seating booths. No one was hurt in the attack. The embassy also cautioned citizens to avoid the area around the Jakarta venue of the terrorism trial of Abu Bakar Bashir, an Indonesian Muslim cleric accused of leading the al-Qaeda linked Jemaah Islamiah (JI) Southeast Asian terror network behind the the deadly Bali and Marriott hotel bombings. The trial began yesterday. US government travellers to Indonesia have also been directed to avoid identifiably Western hotels.
