I re-read my original mail and I recognize I should have probably delivered
less information and went straight to the point. That probably created a
bit of confusion. E.g. I never intended the up metric - or any other metric
- to be considered a boolean.

We recently introduced the disable grouping label aka ['...'] on our 0.20.0
Alertmanager instances.
The label is used in our routes as shown in the piece of configuration
below:
routes:
- receiver: 'slack_primary'
group_by: [...] # disables grouping
continue: true
