there is a program called FileBox Extender

 it's pretty good
it changes the way most file box dialogs work
makes them resizable, has a list of favorites, preserves details sorting

I put my data in a folder that starts with a 1 like 1-dave so everytime
I get a file dialog box, my folder is always at the top of the list.

 Interesting thread.

Didn't know that everyone else out there hated the MyDocuments default
as
 much as I did.

Maybe the real soultion is to simply completely delete the folder and all
of
its relatives (such as MyMusic and MyPictures).

Murphys Law says that MS would either recreate them or crash somewhere
 trying to find them.

 Agh!

Do you want to move the physical location of My Documents?
If so, right click on the My Documents icon on the desktop, and enter
a

You can also use the TweakUI Control Panel applet from MS.

Make a start here

Either run regedit and search on 'my documents' and change appropriately.

Or some articles

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;310147
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;256986
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;322014

You can use the keywords at the bottom of the KB articles to search further.

Some office components will complain profusely at doing this and you may need to
change there default settings manually.

But my experience of Protel to date is that it always remembers the last open or saved
to folder, it does not seem to have a default as such and not follow windows the same
as office or other applications would.

Hope this helps a bit

John

Mike,
Most, if not all windows programs remember (in the system registry) the last
directory used by that program. But you can set your My Documents folder to a
specific location such as a mapped drive. Keep in mind that if working
collaboratively that all windows programs do not create lock files (i.e. this
is a poor mans PDM system). You could have a situation where two or more folks
are overwriting each others work.
Does anyone know how the design team feature (with it's members, permissions
and sessions) works with a drive shared in this way? Or if the *.ldb file
created when a design is opened would lock out all others?

Mike,
can't help with all of your apps but the Microsoft apps (at least
the newer ones) usually have the capability to set your default directories.
It is usually in the setup or options configuration area of the apps
themselves.

As far as P99SE, on my system it always defaults to the last
directory I stored in or the last directory I opened files from. Possibly
this is influenced by Save Preferences checkbox under the Big Down
Arrow, Preferences, System Preferences, mine is checked.

Unfortuantely, the last 16 or so years have been somewhat solo on Protel, as
most of my colleagues over the years have felt that Protel's executive staff

Hmm, programs often remember the last used location for file open/whatever
dialogs.

For those that don't specify a directory the dialogs would default to the
current directory. The means you could set a starting directory in the
program shortcut and within a session the current directory worked like
memory for last used directory.

In Win98 (or probably some slipstreamed IE update - I don't remember) the
default for system file open/whatever dialogs changed to My Documents
which is incredibly annoying because the current directory memory is lost
and you have to navigate away from My Documents in *every* dialog.

There are ways to change the location of My Documents. You can speed
things up by placing some shortcuts to the directories you want to use in
My Documents so at least they are only a click away.

To disable the default starting in My Documents on Win98 add this
registry key

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Documents]
@=
DisableStartInMyDocs=dword:0001

Don't think that will work under 2k or XP.

Cheers, Terry.

Re: [PEDA] Default Pointer

2002-12-05 Thread Brad Velander
Mike,
not sure precisely what you were trying to say, the net police seem to have
struck out key words from your reply. Maybe they took offence at some
language you might have used. 8^

I use Camtastic all the time. Typically I copy my Gerber files from
their original creation directory to a common Gerber directory near the root
of my directory structure. This gets around the long directory/long
addressing bug. Every time I open Camtastic, open files or import Gerber, it
is always pointing at that one Gerber directory. Sometimes I have
subdirectories within my Gerber directory and Camtastic always points to the
last one I was accessing.

Now I will qualify my account by the fact I am not using W98 or XP.
I have used NT and W2000, the behaviour I described is consistent across
those OS platforms so I don't think it has anything to do with Camtastic,
maybe it is Bill's handy work.

Sincerely,
Brad Velander.

Re: [PEDA] Default Pointer

2002-12-05 Thread Dennis Saputelli

there is a program called FileBox Extender

http://www.hyperionics.com/

it's pretty good
it changes the way most file box dialogs work
makes them resizable, has a list of favorites, preserves details sorting
etc etc

Is that so,open up Camtastik ..import gerber...my documents
every time I know its petty but I use this program 100 times a year,
multiply that by the amount of keystrokes it takes to get to another
 drive/folder/folder/file. I'm getting petty here

John,

File sharing feature works fine accross network and shared drives. If two users with
the same access privileges try to open the same file, the second user will be denied
access. The same second user can access other files in the same .ddb if they are not
accessed by the first user. The admin user can always access files and override the
others' work.

Mike,
Most, if not all windows programs remember (in the system registry) the last
directory used by that program.

Re: [PEDA] Default Pointer

2002-12-05 Thread Dennis Saputelli
you really ought to give FileBox Extender a spin (free trial)
i does just what you want and is easier than setting up shortcuts

(project paths change all the time for us at least)

it has a recently used folder list and a favorite list
it's pretty simple and unobtrusive

works with most everything except acad doesn't do as it tells it
but acad is surprising good about going where you would want it to go

Do you want to move the physical location of My Documents?
If so, right click on the My Documents icon on the desktop, and enter a
new path (to a new drive etc...)
You can also use the TweakUI Control Panel applet from MS.

Interesting thread.

Didn't know that everyone else out there hated the MyDocuments default as
much as I did.

Maybe the real soultion is to simply completely delete the folder and all of
its relatives (such as MyMusic and MyPictures).

Murphys Law says that MS would either recreate them or crash somewhere
trying to find them.

Agh!

Deleting MyDocuments is a brilliant idea Jami, but it doesn't work.

The reason for this is, that there is a permanent file lock on one of its
relatives...
MyMSHeadaches and a new one thats popped up since installing
