did you empty the recycle bin before compress?
BTW, I finally turned off compress on exit, too slow to tolerate.

 Hi,
I noticed a Protel 99SE SP6 .ddb project had grown to 24 Mbytes and took a
 long time to open.
No amount of clearing out the garbage, compacting the database on exit, or
running the repair tool would reduce the file size.
Eventually I started a new project database, open the old data base, and
copied all the folders and files from the old into the new.
This brought the file size down to about 4 MBytes. Much better!

So my question is, what is happening, and is there an easier way to clean up
 the file?

(I admit that on a few occasions I have terminated 99SE with the Windows
2000 task manager, so perhaps some trash is left in the database that is not
linked to the project structures?). Unfortunately the database password
seems to have changed in this latest version SP6 as I can't open it with
Access anymore to look at the database structure.
