Re: [PEDA] Keypad land pattern design

2001-07-24 Thread Brad Velander

Steve,
having done the same design for a number of years, you need to work
closely with your customer to meet their expectations for the keypad
contacts. The design is typically not difficult or tightly restrained in any
fashion except for the expected operation at the user level. There are a lot
of issues that relate to the performance which go far beyond the work/no
work issues. (i.e., type of device, key response time, is the button well
restrained physically or does it roll significantly.) I worked for Advanced
Gravis for five years, we did study after study of silicon membrane switches
and developed our own requirements but the demands of a PC gamer are
significantly different from a photocopier, portable CD player or other
devices.
One of your questions about finish, didn't you already answer that
earlier when you mentioned carbon impregnated donut shape? You maybe weren't
too clear there. My initial comment would be, if your boards are
manufactured in SE Asia, gold flash over nickel, in SE Asia this is your
cheapest finish which will work very well for membrane switches (4 - 8 micro
inches gold flash, over 60 - 100 microinches of Nickel, life near infinite,
the silicon will deteriorate before the finish is shot).

Reliability and low cost... wait a minute don't i work for you?
i've got that quote you asked for. you know 15 .lbs of sh*t in a ziploc
sandwich bag. we can do that for free and it has a half life of 33 million
years. let me know if this will do. if not perhaps we can get more creative
with the payment schedule. ;)

sorry i cannot help for real. but i can't say these things to my customers
and i'm sure all of us have felt like telling them that on numerous
occasions.

oh well, time to put my gloves back on and try to squeeze all of it in that
little bag!!!

good luck!
