Not really helpfull, I know :
I was never able to have it working somewhat 
properly at all. Look at the autoplacer as
'experimental' gadget, and proceed manually 
to have the job done.

I admit I lost the patience after a few hours 
of trying.

Danny,
If you want to do a quick and dirty see if it fits:

Select all components
Interactive place in RECTANGLE
Then draw a rectangle

All of the components will fall inside your drawn rectangle,   you may have
to experiment a little to get spacing

I tried that, and it is a good help, but it places SMD pads on top of
through hole pads (SMD on bottom side, and T on top side)
