thanks for the answer, i didn't know about this stuff
(they did say for 2-sided)
it doesn't sound like you can or would solder to these
if that is correct then you would have to add a via to any through hole
parts that have a top side connection, right?
now that i think about this sounds like the 'thru plate' the guys who
make the mechanical proto milling machines hawk

Dennis,
the silver via through hole that they mention is the silver epoxy
ink via process. They mask the vias one side, feed in silver epoxy ink, mask
the topside and cure it. It is an inexpensive plating process for 2 sided
PCBs. It is also the only reliable through hole process for cheap CEM1 and
Phenolic type laminate materials because they cannot be typically
electroplated or can't be electroplated reliably.
I would have to doubt that the silver via through hole process is
used for any multilayer assemblies if that is what you were reading into the
brochures.
As for cost savings, they save costs by using the cheaper laminates,
punching holes instead of drilling. The 20 - 30% savings is probably a
little on the conservative side because the laminates are that much cheaper
then FR4. The additional savings would typically be from punching holes. The
silver via process itself is not that much cheaper then electroplating, you
save on the laminate and the punching costs.
Sincerely,
Brad Velander.

Subject: Re: [PEDA] silver thru hole
just got a paper glossy brochure from a (volume) bd shop in korea
they are promoting something called 'silver through hole'
to quote (sic)
We recommend Silver Through Hole PCBs for the cost savings and serve
customers with design change.
-Cost reduction by 20-30% compared with FR-4 double sided PTH
-Shorter delivery time
-Stable quality specially in bow and twist
anybody hear of Silver Through Hole or know what it is?
is it done onshore state side?
i have heard that the biggest bottleneck is plating time, maybe this
addresses that somehow
BTW, they also claim multilayer capacity of 20Km2/ month !
