I am testing this now. But I believe this is one of those cases of projects with huge amounts of small files killing download times and overall performance. I know Bryan and Augie are working on new code that works better with these types of project on both upload and download.
We've noticed that any project with huge amounts of files (in this case 160,000+) takes a really long time to upload and download. The code for the downloading fix is pretty much done and being tested recently, but is not pushed yet. Bryan and Augie would have more technical information for you.
