How can you not have confidence in the crackerjack team that brought you
Operation Iraqi Freedom, which foundered and led to Operation Together Forward,
which stumbled and led to Operation Together Forward II, which collapsed and

nobodys together and everythings going backward?

Five Flaws in the President's Plan (by Zbigniew Brzezinski)
The president's speech gives rise to five broad observations:
· It provided a more realistic analysis of the situation in Iraq than any
previous presidential statement. It acknowledged failure, though it dodged
accountability for that failure by the standard device of assuming personal
responsibility. Its language was less Islamophobic than has been customary with
President Bush's rhetoric since Sept. 11, though the president still could not
resist the temptation to engage in a demagogic oversimplification of the
challenge the United States faces in Iraq, calling it a struggle to safeguard
"a young democracy" against extremists and an effort to protect American
society from terrorists. Both propositions are more than dubious.

commentators are discussing the surge as if it were real.
I invite the reader to examine the speech. The "surge" content consists of
nonsensical propagandistic statements. The real content of the speech is toward
the end where Bush mentions Iran and Syria.

Bush Isolates Himself Further (by Jim Lobe)
President George W. Bush's decision to escalate U.S. military intervention in
Iraq and issue new threats against Syria and Iran appears to have left him
politically more isolated than ever.
Both Democrats and Republicans expressed regret that Bush appeared to reject
the central recommendations of the bipartisan Iraq Study Group (ISG),
particularly its call to gradually withdraw U.S. combat troops, tie future
support for the Iraqi government to its efforts at healing the sectarian
divide, and directly engage Iran and Syria, along with Baghdad's other
neighbors, to stabilize the country.
At the same time, military analysts said the 21,500 troops Bush plans to add to
the 132,000 already deployed to Iraq were unlikely to succeed in their mission
to pacify Baghdad and al Anbar province.
