True or False? 1. The US invaded Iraq in order to do away with its weapons of mass destruction.
FALSE. The government claimed that we were 45 minutes away from an atomic explosion, that we could soon be attacked with anthrax or other deadly bio-weapons, and that the location of the weapons was known with exactitude. It was all a lie concocted and pushed by Bush, Powell, Rice, Cheney, Rumsfeld, and a number of neocon and non-neocon allies. http://americanwars.blogspot.com/2007/01/true-or-false-1.html The real crimes against humanity (by Doug Thompson) With the brutal hanging of Saddam Hussein in the pre-dawn hours Saturday, the transformation of the United States of America from world power to international exporter of terror is complete. While one can argue that Hussein deserved to die for his many crimes against humanity, the question that history will ask is whether or not he deserved to die at the hands of a nation that invaded his country without provocation and orchestrated a trial to fulfill a political agenda of an American President who, himself, may be both a madman and greater threat to world peace. http://americanwars.blogspot.com/2007/01/real-crimes-against-humanity-by-doug.html Iraq: Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow (by Noam Chomsky and Michael Albert) 1. Why did the U.S. invade Iraq? (And why did important sectors of the political elite, like Scowcroft, oppose doing so?) What are the U.S.motives for staying? The official reason was what Bush, Powell, and others called "the single question": will Saddam end his development of Weapons of Mass Destruction? The official Presidential Directive states the primary goal as to: "Free Iraq in order to eliminate Iraqi weapons of mass destruction, their means of delivery and associated programs, to prevent Iraq from breaking out of containment and becoming a more dangerous threat to the region and beyond." That was the basis for congressional support for the invasion. The Directive goes on with the goal of cutting "Iraqi links to and sponsorship of international terrorism," etc. A few phrases are thrown in from the standard boilerplate about freedom that accompanies every action, and is close to a historical universal, hence dismissed as meaningless by reasonable people, but there to be dredged up by the doctrinal system when needed. http://americanwars.blogspot.com/2007/01/iraq-yesterday-today-and-tomorrow-by.html Two Thousand Years Later, the Story of Issa Renewed (by Ibrahim Ebeid) Your Excellency we have known you for long time in the battlefield of Jihad and struggle. You are our guiding light and the force that motivates us to carry the banner of our nation. We assure you that we will never let it fall. It will stay as high as your spirit. Two thousand years ago, our compatriot, Issa Al Massih, Jesus Christ, whose ancestors came from Iraq to Palestine, was assassinated, like you, for his principles that he stood for, the Romans and their allies in the area sacrificed him in the Day of Sacrifice. It is no coincidence that the sectarians, the traitors of the Arab nation who betrayed the principles of our nation that you have preached to us until the last moment, sacrificed you on Eid Al-Adha, the day of sacrifice. It was an honor for you to die like Issa Al-Massih with courage, dignity and fearless. http://americanwars.blogspot.com/2007/01/two-thousand-years-later-story-of-issa.html A Lynching (by Riverband) It's official. Maliki and his people are psychopaths. This really is a new low. It's outrageous- an execution during Eid. Muslims all over the world (with the exception of Iran) are outraged. Eid is a time of peace, of putting aside quarrels and anger- at least for the duration of Eid. This does not bode well for the coming year. No one imagined the madmen would actually do it during a religious holiday. It is religiously unacceptable and before, it was constitutionally illegal. We thought we'd at least get a few days of peace and some time to enjoy the Eid holiday, which coincides with the New Year this year. We've spent the first two days of a holy holiday watching bits and pieces of a sordid lynching. America the saviorÂ… After nearly four years and Bush's biggest achievement in Iraq has been a lynching. Bravo Americans. http://americanwars.blogspot.com/2007/01/lynching-by-riverband-its-official.html Christians at War (by John F. Kendrick - 1916) Onward, Christian soldiers! Duty's way is plain; Slay your [Christian] neighbors, or by them be slain, Pulpiteers are spouting effervescent swill, God above is calling you to rob and rape and kill, All your acts are sanctified by the Lamb on high; If you love the Holy Ghost, go murder, pray and die. Onward, Christian soldiers! Rip and tear and smite! Let the gentle Jesus bless your dynamite. Splinter skulls with shrapnel, fertilize the sod; Folks who do not speak your tongue deserve the curse of God. Smash the doors of every home, pretty maidens seize; Use your might and sacred right to treat them as you please. http://americanwars.blogspot.com/2007/01/christians-at-war-by-john-f.html Book of the week: Manufacturing Consent: The Political Economy of the Mass Media (by Noam Chomsky) __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
