the placement options don't specify the horizontal position inside the page, 
but the vertical floating, i.e. top, bottom, here, ...

First of all this isn't a ProTeXt related problem, so it might be better to 
post it inside a forum concerned to LaTeX related problems. For my person, i 
would assume that there is whitespace left arround your figure, which might 
lead to the effect described above.
