Also, it couples the LANG section to the DOM. As we'd like to remove all DOM dependencies out of the LANG section for Prototype 2.0 to allow using it server side, this is better avoided. Would there be a simple solution to allow for customizing such behaviour using an optional reviver or through subclassing Template? Finally, I'm all for changes improving performance of Template. In you benchmarks, can you make that it doesn't hurt the perf of String#interpolate, though.
