Why don't you just observe the 'change' event on the select? Works in
all browsers, and is the standard method for observing select boxes.

One tip, where you do:

>                var someNodeList = 
> $('game_types').getElementsByTagName('option');
>                var nodes = $A(someNodeList);
>                nodes.each(

Can really be:

$('game_types').select('option').each(function(options){
});
