I'm experiencing this same problem in IE8, and like Dan, I've also tried various version of prototype including RC3. My HTML and CSS is significantly more complex than the test above and probably isn't worth posting, but I've been playing with difference CSS and so far I've been unable to find a workaround. I would vote for this to be fixed in a future release of script.aculo.us
