The only way a session in your browser can access ANY resource from the server is by firing off a new request - either a full page request, or an Ajax request. You probably want Ajax.Request (or Ajax.Updater if you're going to display the file in your page); and you need to write a server script which will respond to the Ajax request and send the file contents. Prototype runs on the client (ie webbrowser) rather than the server. I wish we could help you but the answer depends on the webserver you are running and it's configuration.
