Audio track problem solved. The solution was very simple indeed. In order to
hear the recorded material from the track, you have to unarm it otherwise

I never could get that to work. I dono why. I select the track/tracks I
want to apply clip gain on, select the audio, then do ctrl+shift+up and down
arrows. Maybe I need to go listen to Matt's tutorial again on how to do it.

Toggling the input mode between Auto Input and Input only monitoring with
Option-k will allow you to monitor recorded material even if the track is
record enabled. I described this in a previous response. You might've missed it.

Pro Tools certainly has a Gain plug-in but it's meant for file-based operations
within Audio suite. A real-time gain plug-in is sort of moot because one would
normally just attain the proper levels between preamp and interface and faders
do the rest. Oh, and there's always the master volume on
