It's in the Transport and also in the Edit window as long as you have MIDI

The only way to have a session default to a tempo other than 120 bpm is
to create a template with the session tempo set to whatever you want. All of
your sessions created from that template will be at that tempo. Regarding the
previous question, if you set the tempo without the conductor enabled, when you
enable the conductor (which you'll need to follow tempo changes), the tempo
will probably revert to 120 bpm. You'll probably need to create a tempo event
at the beginning of the session and another tempo change where you want it to
go to the new tempo.

If you need a sudden tempo change, create a tempo event at the point
you want the tempo to change. Make sure you have a tempo event at the top of
the song and then a tempo event at whatever bar you need. In both cases, use
the "Constant" tempo change. In the dialog, click on the tempo, enter a value,
press Return then click Apply.

Go to the position where you want to insert a new tempo. Open tempo
operation window with option numpad 2 and create a constant tempo. You
can open it from the event operation menu as well.

Then it'll immediately jump to whatever tempo you created.

Watch out for the conductor.

LOL Check your spelling. Ritard, spelled with an i or abbreviated rit

LOL Check your spelling. Ritard, spelled with an i or abbreviated rit
on a printed score, refers to the Italian term ritardando: "Gradually
decelerating the tempo of a piece of music, especially at the end of
the piece."

Retard, with an e, is well, naw, it's too easy. Oh ok, it's a term
you're not supposed to be using in 2017. (grin)

Did I imply that by saying a retard? I thought a retard could be
gradual, but not necessarily. I need it to directly go straight from
84 to 64. I don't need a gradual declination. Would that not be
considered then a retard? If not, then sorry. Maybe someone with a
little theory background can set me straight on that term. I'm
willing to learn.

2. Yes, Chris, paramount. I have a click track in this recording. If
I don't change the tempo, then it'll get out of sync, so yes. It's paramount.

Chris, check out the tempo operation window.

You can change the constant to different curves for tempo changes.

Anyway, I'm doing the song with an 84BPM constant tempo. That is...

On the word any more, on more, specifically, the song ends by going

What happens here is once that bar hits, which is at bar 77, and
carries to the end of the song at bar 78, so basically, those last
two bars of the song, there is a retard. So, normally, again, the
song is at 84BPM. What I want is starting at bar 77, and finnishing
the whole rest of the session, I want the tempo to constantly drop
from the constant 84BPM down to 64BPM.

Yes, I do have a click track in this song, and I have ProTools set
to give me a 2 bar count in. Note that this count in is not
actually recorded into the song. I'm using numpad 7 to turn on the
click track, then numpad 8 to toggle on the count in.

Any help with this would be appreciated. In the long run, I'm gonna
have to teach my student how to do this. So, better I learn now,
before we get to that point, that way, I'm prepared.

Re: It's paramount! that I learn this task: Tempoing

2017-08-08 Thread Christopher-Mark Gilland
When you say a tempo event at the top of the song, what would I put for that
event? I mean, I've already set the constant tempo at the beginning to 84BPM,
or is that what you mean, that alone is a tempo event.

Also, is there a way to change the default, so that instead of it defaulting to
128BPM, I could have it default to, say... 80BPM? Most songs I do are slower,
and are around that speed.

If you need a sudden tempo change, create a tempo event at the point you want
the tempo to change. Make sure you have a tempo event at the top of the song
and then a tempo event at whatever bar you need. In both cases, use the
"Constant" tempo change. In the dialog, click on the tempo, enter a value,
press Return then click Apply.
