You have been using the wrong service name. The tcpwrap service names are:
pulseaudio-
for mythtv), stereo audio
bedroom, and mono output asterisk incoming voicemail, using asound.conf),
all from my server with long cables. Pulseaudio is just the right place to
relieve users of the burden to dig through asound.conf configuration,
don't you think?

Ideally, the alsa plugin would not ask for a specific device unless this
is really necessary. I am not sure however, if this is actually an issue
with the plugin or in the app making use of it.

Changing the volume of a stream to 0% doesn't seem to actually silence
that stream, regardless of whether it's from the xmms pulseaudio plugin,
to a null sink happens to be functionally equivalent, then
perhaps all that's needed is a null sink included in the default
configuration.
