If you have a specialist sound card you can create a special mixer profile
for it and tell PA to use via a udev rule.
See the folder {{{/usr/share/pulseaudio/alsa-mixer/profile-sets/}}} on
your system for some example definitions for specialist h/w.
Then you can see how these are applied via udev in
{{{/lib/udev/rules.d/90-pulseaudio.rules}}}

This is a limitation and unless we get a proper enumeration interface there this cannot be fixed. You can manually work-around this however, by loading module-alsa-sink with an explicit hw:x,y alsa device. You could very well built in a virtual mapping at least for the time being - especially since there are not that many cards out there with multiple input ports. On the other hand - the devices are mostly studio cards where you'd like to work on data in realtime and for that one uses ALSA or Jack. I have a soundcard with multiple inputs and outputs.

shows

13: [ 2- 0]: digital audio playback

But in Pulseaudio only the first capture and playback get mapped. The
second is not accessible via Pulseaudio.
