In addition to facts from the agent, it would be great to persist variables set by the ENC onto the node in puppetdb.
The specific use case is from customers who are using the node classifier to set variables describing nodes' application role, logical environment, organizational unit, etc, and then want to use puppetdbquery functions in their modules and mcollective filtering against puppetdb.
The only way to do this today is to make a long round-trip to set the variables in the classifier, use a puppet template to write them to external facts, then query puppetdb on the persisted facts...ewww.

Eric Sorenson Certainly. I'm going to go ahead and just paste it in here for now:
The layout in the unified Puppet Agent will be as follows:

Config files: /etc/puppetlabs/agent/$project

Logs: /var/log/puppetlabs/agent/$project.log

Prefix is /opt/puppetlabs/agent

Binaries live in /opt/puppetlabs/agent/bin

Libraries and headers live in /opt/puppetlabs/agent/lib and /opt/puppetlabs/agent/include, respectively

Architecture independent data (manpages for example) in /opt/puppetlabs/agent/share

Puppet vardir will be /opt/puppetlabs/agent/cache

Puppet ssldir will be /etc/puppetlabs/agent/ssl

User modulepath /etc/puppetlabs/agent/modules

System modulepath (for core community modules) /opt/puppetlabs/agent/modules

MCO plugin dir: /opt/puppetlabs/agent/plugins

Currently, in order to load balance PuppetDB in PE, you need to configure your multiple PuppetDBs to use a single shared certificate.
The puppet_enterprise::profile::puppetdb class including with PE allows you to specify this alternate common cert to use instead of the PuppetDB node's agent cert.
However, if you later use puppetdb ssl-setup, which is very commonly used in troubleshooting scenarios, this will always be overwritten, due to the way the command determines what cert to use:

mycertname=`puppet master --confdir=$agent_confdir --vardir=$agent_vardir --configprint  certname`

orig_public_file=`puppet master --confdir=$agent_confdir --vardir=$agent_vardir --configprint  hostcert`

Additionally, I'd like to disable specific ec2 facts.
For example, ec2_iam* should not be reported as facts, and ec2_network_interface_macs* are just clutter in an environment with an high turnover of nodes.

When cloud-init is used for bootstrapping nodes, a script contained in the userdata is often passed to the node to perform bootstrapping.
In the case of cloud formation, this script often contains IAM credentials (access code/secret code) that are used to call cfn-init.
In my integration of PE with cloudformation, I can see the AWS credentials in the inventory service when running b/c they are captured as a part of the ec2 metadata.
This is not that big of a deal for my use case b/c the credentials only refer to a temporary account that only has the permissions to read metadata from cloudformation instances.
In general, I have concerns over rather capturing userdata with facter may potentially (and unexpectedly) expose a user's credentials in some cases.

Scott Garman asked me this via email and I figured I'd cross post here for posterity:

Can you remember if there was a reason you're running chkconfig --level instead of just chkconfig --del?

I don't remember exactly why, but re-reading the man page I think it's because we don't want Puppet to remove the service from management, we only want Puppet to disable the service. In particular, the note below probably pushed me to using off instead of --del.
--del name Delete the service from chkconfig management, and remove any links in /etc/rc[0-6].d which pertain to it. Note that future package installs for this service may run chkconfig --add, which will re-add such links. To disable a service, run chkconfig name off.

Commit 99a00658 added the ability to provide a weight for an external fact.
The commit also introduced an odd bug where every time an external fact is resolved, the weight of the fact is printed to the console. This is due to the following line in lib/facter/util/directory_loader.rb:

69  data.each { |p,v| collection.add(p, :value = v) { p(weight); has_weight(weight) } }

  Re: Remove deprecated methods from Puppet::Settings and Puppet::Module

When I started removing some of the deprecated methods in Puppet::Settings I ran into these test failures without the `set_value` method (spec/unit/face/certificate_spec.rb:131):

it should use the global setting if set by CLI do

  Puppet.settings.set_value(:dns_alt_names, 'from,the,cli', :cli)

   subject.generate(hostname, options)

   expected = %W[DNS:from DNS:the DNS:cli DNS:#{hostname}]

  csr.subject_alt_names.should =~ expected

end

Jira (PUP-1343) Service provider in RedHat will not create K?? stop scripts

  Re: Service provider in RedHat will not create K?? stop scripts

There's a telling assumption in Jason Antman's comment above (https://tickets.puppetlabs.com/browse/PUP-1343?focusedCommentId=37304page=com.atlassian.jira.plugin.system.issuetabpanels:comment-tabpanel#comment-37304): this should be the job of a package or whatever else installs the service/init script. At our site, that whatever else is puppet. We're using puppet to install locally built packages along with their init scripts, and we're hoping/expecting to be able to have puppet ensure that the appropriate K?? and S?? links are in place. If they aren't, for whatever reason, it should be ease to have puppet fix that. As it is, we get puppet-created S?? links without the corresponding K?? links, and apparently no way to get them without coding raw chkconfig commands. It seems strange to me that in all the things puppet can do, there's no way to simply express service blah should have S?? and K?? links; fix that if they are missing.
This probably gets cleaner under systemd, as 'enable' and 'disable' map more directly to puppet directives, and are completely orthogonal to 'start' and 'stop'. We're not there yet though.
